Steve McNulty signs for Northern Premier League club

Steve McNulty, who previously graced the English Football League, has left fans surprised as he signs for one particular Northern Premier League club.

It was just a few months ago that saw him play has last game for York City in their National League North playoff semi-final defeat to Altrincham.

The 36 year old has been described as a “commanding” centre back who is noted for his aerial ability. As a graduate of the Liverpool Academy, he primarily passes the ball along the ground, often beginning his team’s attacking movements as a result. His first-touch, calmness on the ball and flair have also been praised

He has leadership, captained the Liverpool under-19 team, and won promotions while captaining Barrow, Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers.

Witton Albion are delighted to announce the signing of central defender Steve McNulty.

McNulty, 36, has a wealth of experience with more than 600 career appearances under his belt, including many in the Football League.

He began his career at Liverpool and skippered the Reds at under-19 level before his release from the Anfield club in 2003.

The Liverpool-born centre-back moved into non-league football, starting at Burscough before moving to Vauxhall Motors and then Barrow, with whom he captained to promotion into the Conference.

A move to Fleetwood Town in 2009 saw McNulty achieve two more promotions, helping the club rise from the Conference North to League Two, again as captain.

After leaving The Cod Army, the defender moved south to join Luton Town and once more earned promotion as The Hatters moved from the Conference into League Two, voted into the PFA League Two Team of the Season by his peers in the process.

McNulty returned to the North West to join Tranmere Rovers in 2015 and yet won his fifth and sixth career promotion to help the Wirral club back from non-league into League One, playing an instrumental role in the heart of the defence and as captain.

Following his release from Prenton Park, McNulty joined National League North side York City with whom he spent last term, helping The Minstermen to the play-offs where they lost out to eventual winners Altrincham.

The central defender joins Isaac Baldwin, Scott Bakkor, Josh Gregory, Steven Tames and James Hooper as new arrivals in to Carl Macauley’s squad at Wincham Park.

McNulty said: “I had some offers to stay full-time but I chose to join Witton because two good friends are in charge, people I’ve known for more than 20 years.

“It’s a good club with a good squad that I think can push for promotion this year. The management team are both very ambitious, as am I.”

The defender is looking to use his experience of more than 600 career appearances and six promotions to help the Wincham Park outfit as he moves into the next phase of his football career.

“I’m looking to make the transition into coaching and to pass on some of the experience I have gained over my career, so it was a good fit for both parties.

“I’m still looking to be successful this season as Witton had a good season last year and have a very good squad that is more than capable of challenging for promotion this season.”
