Sky mute Celtic fans’ grim Queen chants also sung by Dundee United and Hibernian supporters

Sky mute Celtic fans’ grim chants on the Queen, something that was also sung by Dundee United and Hibernian supporters at the weekend.

Dundee United have only slightly condemned fans chanting ‘Lizzie’s in a box’ during the tribute to the Queen ahead of kick-off against Rangers on Saturday.

The minute’s silence for the Queen prior to the Scottish Premiership meeting between Rangers and Dundee United was marred by ugly chants which could be heard from the away section of Ibrox.

Loud boos from the home fans echoed around the stadium after the referee blew his whistle to end the mark of respect.

Dundee United released a statement following the 2-1 defeat, it read: “Dundee United are aware of the actions of a small section of the crowd who chose to not respect the minute’s silence before this afternoon’s match at Ibrox,” the short statement reads.

“As a club, ahead of the game we reached out to advise our supporters of the pre-match arrangements with the expectation that the minute silence would be observed.”

Rangers also paid tribute to the Queen before their Champions League defeat to Napoli on Wednesday, defying UEFA’s orders and sang ‘God Save the King’ prior to their 3-0 loss.

The club could be sanctioned as UEFA awaits the official report from its match officials before deciding whether to investigate.

It’s claimed that UEFA will consider taking action once they have received the necessary information.

talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, though, was full of praise for Rangers for their defiance of the ban from UEFA on playing the anthem.

“I think UEFA should wind their necks in. They’ll do what they do,” he said.

“Rangers will know the rules and made a conscious decision so will take the consequences of it. They’re big boys, they’ll understand the rules.

“The bottom line is they made a decision, I think it was an admiral one. I think there are values in life you need to stand up for and this is one of them.”

Also on Saturday afternoon, at Easter Road, some Hibernian fans were also guilty of singing the same vile “Lizzie’s in a box” chant during their own minute’s silence.

All eyes however were on the events at St Mirren, with Celtic fans in attendance and already planning to make their feelings known about the Queen and royal family.

In midweek, Ange Postecoglou’s team were in action for the first time since Queen’s passing as they drew 1-1 to pick up their first points of the Champions League campaign against Shakhtar Donesk with number of banners referencing her death were seen in the away end.

These included one which read ‘f*** the crown’ and another reading ‘sorry for your loss Michael Fagan’, with BT Sport being forced to apologise after the camera panned to the signs.

They had another banner on show for the game at St Mirren, it read “If you hate the royal family clap your hands!”.

Sky apologised to viewers this afternoon after chants during the minute’s applause for the Queen ahead of St Mirren’s match against Celtic.

The Paisley club opted to hold a minute’s applause ahead of the Scottish Premiership clash.

However, during live TV coverage of the fixture chants of “If you hate the Royal Family, clap your hands” could be heard loudly.

Celtic supporters in the away end also hoisted a banner with the same words as the minute’s applause began in Paisley.

After the minute’s applause, Sky Sports commentator Ian Crocker apologised to any viewers offended by anything they might have heard.

Addressing the chants, he said: “Apologies if you were offended by anything you might have heard.

“Most people showed respect some did not.”

When asked if he had a message for supporters ahead of Sunday’s planned tribute, Postecoglou said: ‘I have the same message to our fans that we always have. As I said before the game (against Shakhtar), we will abide by the protocols. We wore black armbands on Wednesday night.

‘I think there’s a minute’s applause, we will abide by whatever obligations and responsibilities we have as a football club. We will do that in a respectful manner. We want our supporters to do the same.’
