Six arrests were made at Saturday’s League Two match Grimsby v Doncaster as fans took to clashing with each other in the street.
Six people have been arrested as Rovers took all three points in a 3-1 win at Blundell Park in Cleethorpes.
Humberside Police told GrimsbyLive that five people were arrested before the game and one person was arrested during it.
Police haven’t said what they were arrested for – the suspects remain in police custody as enquiries continue.
According to officers, a “small minority” of home and away fans met in the Cleethorpes area after the game. Groups of police were deployed but no further arrests were made.
Flares were thrown onto the pitch after Donny’s first goal, which the EFL says will result in a club ban for those responsible.
In a statement to GrimsbyLive, Humberside Police said: “A football match was held today between Grimsby Town and Doncaster Rovers. Throughout the day our officers were pleased to meet and talk to fans from both Grimsby and Doncaster – and we extend our thanks to the vast majority of the 8,000+ supporters who helped make the day enjoyable for so many.
“Six arrests were made in total – five before the game and one during the game. They all remain in our custody while enquiries continue.
“Following the game, sadly, a small minority of home and away fans met in the Cleethorpes area. Our officers were immediately deployed with the incident being swiftly resolved and no further arrests being made.
“We would like to reassure anyone who was concerned by the deployment of officers into the area this evening that this was done to ensure there was no escalation, to prevent offences, and to keep people our communities safe. We are grateful to the vast majority for their support and understanding.
“Throughout this evening, officers will be in Grimsby and Cleethorpes alongside our partners as part of our standing commitment to support a safe and enjoyable night-time economy.”
The game meanwhile saw Doncaster produce a superb attacking display to beat Grimsby with a 3-1 victory at Blundell Park.
George Miller netted twice, either side of a wonder strike from Harrison Biggins, before Grimsby’s John McAtee marked his return from injury with a late consolation.
For the opener, Miller went wide and sent the ball to Kyle Knoyle who was denied by Max Crocombe, only his team-mate to convert the rebound.
Grimsby tried to get an equaliser as Harry Clifton couldn’t find the target from 25 yards before also passed up a golden one-on-one chance after racing clean through.
At the other end, Miller smashed an effort shortly before half time, but got too much elevation on that attempt with Crocombe not having to make a save.
Biggins produced a sensational half-volley to double the away side’s lead shortly after the restart giving a mountain to climb for Grimsby.
The hosts themselves opened to the counter-attack with Miller slotting home his second for Doncaster before McAtee came off the bench to reply.
