Shrimps Trust explains decision to write open letter to Morecambe chairman outlining concerns

The Shrimps Trust explains decision to write open letter to Morecambe chairman Kuljeet Singh Momi, outlining concerns they have.

The Vice Chair of the Shrimps Trust, Ben Cassar, talks through the disappointment and concerns over a number of statements and promises made by the club regarding various key issues both on and off the pitch.

Meanwhile, the @The1920Union fan group calls for Morecambe supporters to boycott home matches until there is a change of manager. See more on that HERE.

Dave Salmon: “Open letter sent on behalf of all of the Shrimps Trust trustees to the chairman of Morecambe Football Club, Kuljeet Singh Momi, yesterday.

“Talk us through a bit, if you can, about the letter and the content of it and why you felt it was necessary to send such a letter at this stage of the season.”

Ben Cassar: “I think, yeah, it’s a good question and I think it’s really, it’s straightforward and it is what it is. There’s nothing hidden here, so there isn’t a hidden message, there isn’t there isn’t any animosity.

“This is about ensuring that we lead the line with the direct line, the direct ways of communicating with the fans.

“We have had concerns from the fan base post public statements, from the club, post the fans forum. It’s our responsibility, we’re duty-bound to represent the voice of the fans and that’s all that is.

“So there’s a lot of people that are concerned about quite a number of things and what we’d like to do is give an open, transparent, public opportunity for the chairman to put those fears and concerns to bed.

“It’s nothing more than that. We are very, very much wanting to work alongside Kuljeet and the Panjab Warriors to ensure that the club is running the right way and the starting way that we feel is the best thing to do is to communicate openly, nothing be hidden, everything out there for everyone to see.

“Open, honest, transparent communication but fundamentally getting answers that paying fans genuinely have concerns about, that’s all that is.”

Dave Salmon: “And those questions are to do primarily with promises that have been made by individuals in the club that haven’t so far come to fruition.”

Ben Cassar: “Yeah, look, we can talk openly, that’s what this is. So at the fans forum Rapinda was there to represent the voice of the club and the voice of Punjab Warriors and we felt, as well as our members felt, that a lot was said there that was slightly anecdotal and there wasn’t much of, there wasn’t anything quantifiable, nothing really tangible either.

“So what we want is to benchmark what’s been said, you know, give us dates, give us costs, give us plans, give us an overview, give us an absolute view into what the makings are of the organisation that’s behind the club.

“We just want answers on what we feel are really genuine questions that fans are entitled to know the answer to.

“And like I said, there are concerns, there are frustrations, people are, you know, we all react differently, don’t they?

“And some fans are angry, some fans are worried, some fans are, you know, not concerned, some fans are concerned.

“All we’re doing is making sure that those fans are heard and we’re doing that in the most diplomatic way we can at the moment and we feel like that is the way that will give us the best opportunity for the club to move forward, people to have trust in the organisation that’s running the football club and be able to just come to the day-to-day matches and think the football’s great or the football’s not great.

“Hopefully when those answers come we’ll all be reassured and if they’re not, if we’re not reassured by it, the fans know that we will take on a secondary conversation and ensure that we get to the answer that we need to know and that’s all that is.”

Dave Salmon: “Because finally Ben, before we talk about matters on the field this afternoon, that’s all since the takeover by Panjab Warriors happened back in August, that is all that fans have wanted, isn’t it?

“We’ve had years of talking about what’s going on behind the scenes and off the field or not happening or whatever the case might be.

“We as football fans, we want to talk about matters on the pitch and not have to worry about anything to do with the management of it.”

Ben Cassar: “Yeah, that’s exactly it and I think that’s the role of the trust, isn’t it? What we’d love to be able to be in a position to do, as much as we know we’ve got the trust of a good proportion of the fan base, we’d love for the concerns to be put through to us and fans know the trust they’ve got hold of it.

“They will sort it, when we need to tell them something we will tell them something. If we’re quiet, believe me, believe me when I say when we’re quiet it’s because we’re busier behind the scenes than when we’re vocal.

“So trust us, keep the concerns coming to us, we know they can contact us, we will funnel everything through to the right channels, we’ll do it as openly as we can.

“One of the big points to make was the conversation between Rapinda and a member of the Morecambe fan base about communication, it’s not conducive to have conversations with the CEO, between one fan and the CEO.

“That has to be from the CEO to the whole fan base. That’s the way everyone understands what’s happening. So those are our lines of thinking, we’re going to push the right methods, we’re going to push the right communication strategies, we are just pushing forward what we believe is right and we will absolutely go forward with all the concerns, big or small, and we won’t stop doing that.

“But like I said to finish on, we intend to have a really good working collaborative relationship with Panjab Warriors and that’s the intent at the moment.”
