Sheffield Wednesday fans troll Alan Shearer with amusing chant as Newcastle are knocked out

Sheffield Wednesday fans troll Alan Shearer with an amusing chant as Newcastle United are knocked out of the FA Cup Third Round.

The League One side secured a massive victory, handing Premier League high flyers Newcastle just their second defeat of the season.

Josh Windass found the net twice in the second half as the Owls put in a great performance in an can’t take your eye off it tie at Hillsborough.

Newcastle got one back thanks to substitute Bruno Guimaraes but as kept pushing on for a late equaliser, time ran out and chances were squandered.

The defeat is Eddie Howe’s side’s first in all competitions since the 31st of August against Liverpool.

Sheffield Wednesday fans couldn’t help but mock Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, who was on punditry duties at the game.

They could be heard singing on more than one occasion: “Shearer, what’s the score? Shearer! Shearer! What’s the score?”

Newcastle fans responded with shouts of: “Shearer! Shearer! Shearer!”

“I will say they [Sheffield Wednesday] deserved to go through,” said Shearer post-match. “I thought they were superb. I did’t think they played particularly well in the first-half but they were a much better outfit in the second-half. Created chances, Josh Windass scored two very clever goals, could have got a hat-trick, hit the bar from a free-kick and Newcastle weren’t good enough in the final third, missed far too many chances.

“Of course it [Newcastle’s goal] was, it was obviously offside. It’s a good ball in but you can see – I know the goalkeeper saves it but that’s irrelevant – he [Bruno Guimaraes] is offside.

“So whether we thought Sheffield Wednesday’s first goal was off, it didn’t change things. They deserved to go through Sheffield Wednesday. Newcastle weren’t good enough today. He [Eddie Howe] took a chance by changing the team and the players he put in were not good enough.”

Dublin added: “[It was a] great performance, all the words, all the positive words you want to throw towards Darren Moore’s men, they ticked every box you need to get to the next round – endeavour, work rate, bodies on the line, good finishing. I’m not going to say they deserved to go through but when you’ve got one chance, they took their chances.

“They were outstanding in the end, finishing was better in the end. Newcastle let up too many chances that were on a plate. They should have scored more than one goal, they just weren’t good enough in the final third.”

Chris Waddle (Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live) said at full time: “What a game, what a cup tie! Give Sheffield Wednesday massive praise they had a go at Newcastle, they didn’t sit back, they were forced back in the last 15 minutes.

“Newcastle will kick themselves, they had glorious chances and could have put the game to bed but Wednesday stuck at it, rolled their sleeves up and they deserved it.”

Martin Keown (Former England defender on BBC One) said: “Well absolutely outstanding. They take this applause from their fans and so does the manager. To a man they were outstanding. Huge upset when you consider how good Newcastle have been this season.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: “Bitterly disappointed to go out, I thought the performance was OK. We created enough chances to win the tie and their goalkeeper made a number of great saves but we weren’t clinical enough when those presentable opportunities were there. We have to accept the defeat and Sheffield Wednesday battled for everything, as we did, but it wasn’t to be.

“We have a very small squad and have to protect that squad for games ahead. We felt we were strong enough to win the game today and I stick by that based on the first-half performance where we had chances to score, we just weren’t clinical in front of goal.

“We haven’t experienced defeat a lot this season and it’s very painful, you don’t want to lose any game. We were determined to do well in this competition but it wasn’t to be and there’s always things to learn. We created chances tonight similar to the Leeds game that we didn’t win where we will kick ourselves when we look back at some of those moments and think how we didn’t score.

“The Leicester game [Carabao Cup quarter-final] was on the horizon for us and we picked a team based with this that game in mind and another Premier League game at the weekend. If that game wasn’t there the team selection would have possibly been different today. We are trying to juggle everything and make sure we were strong enough to win and I thought we there but obviously that didn’t materialise.”

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore speaking to the BBC: “It’s one of the proudest moments in my managerial career to date. I’m really pleased for everybody at the club and I’m delighted for the players. We were up against a really good team and put in an excellent performance.

“We knew we had to perform on and off the ball, and the way we went about it was spot on. We believe we can score goals here, we got them, and then were resolute to the onslaught at the end.

“We couldn’t sit back against these, eventually they’ll pick you off. We wanted to engage them high [up the pitch] and we had to be brave on the ball, to play through the press if possible. We can also mix it up a bit with Michael Smith up top and I think that worked today.

“We didn’t allow them to settle into their rhythm and that gave us some hope in the game. I thought every one of them did well. Josh Windass will get the headlines but Cameron Dawson pulled off a couple of great saves. You know you’re going to get tested against teams like this so your keeper has to concentrate and be in the right place when needed, and he was.

“We want to improve every game and that was another step in the right direction for us. Nights like these give everybody hope, a purpose, a vision, for the second half of the season. There’s a lot of hard work ahead but we will approach each hurdle one by one.”

This is wha fans had to say as Sheffield Wednesday fans take to troll Alan Shearer with an amusing chant as Newcastle are knocked out…

@Afoxich: Magic of the FA cup is well and truly alive. Hats off to every single one of them that was incredible. The difference in ability is absolutely massive but Newcastle United managed to come to Hillsborough and give us a bit of a game. Fair play to them 👏🏻 #SWFC

@ircowell: Not the best today! Understand Eddie choice to give some players a chance but Lewis, Ritchie. Lascelles, wood not good enough! Anderson was poor as well, we pick ourselves up for Tuesday as that is our biggest game of the season! Well played #SWFC good luck in the next round

@mrcoops10: Absolutely masterclass tonight! And they’ll still be fools crowing he doesn’t know what he’s doing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Take a bow Darren Moore & lap up all the plaudits tonight. #SWFC

@_owlornothing_: don’t think I appreciated how much we needed a game, a performance, a win like that until it happened. Will be watching those highlights for a while yet I’m sure. Absolutely buzzing. #swfc

@Victoria1867: Ant and Dec, Alan Shearer, Cheryl Cole, Jimmy Nail, Scotty T, Shola Ameobi… your lads took one hell of a beating 💙🤍 #swfc

@Dandan_AC: Well done #SWFC. Good team and gave us a better game than some premier league teams, took your chances whilst #NUFC missed a couple of sitters. Defended well, especially last 10 mins when #NUFC put the big hitters on. Good luck in the Next round.

@GallowgatePete: Lots of understandable negativity but even though many #nufc squad players failed their auditions, with better finishing and their goalkeeper not playing brilliantly, we should have had at least a draw. Fair play #swfc took their ops and good luck in the next round 👏🏻

@llphilc: Not great from the Toon tonight, the game showed a lack of depth of quality in the squad. But we battled hard and put loads of pressure on at the end. Wednesday defended excellently and were clinical – they deserved the win 🙌🏻 good luck for the next round 👍🏻 #NUFC #SWFC

@ManhattanOwl: One of those very special nights at Hillsborough tonight. Well done Wednesday – played with passion, poise and precision when it mattered – and the fans. Just shows where we should be. Whole family loved that. #swfc

@matdawe1: Deserved win by #SWFC . We know who we need to move on let’s hope Eddie and team does. We did always know that this point was going to come . Change some now and bigger overhaul in summer. Onwards and upwards 🖤🤍

@Gallowgatetwee1: Bad result and in hindsight too many changes but we needed to rotate and rest some players at some point. Really highlighted our lack of squad depth. Fair play to Sheffield Wednesday, they were bang up for it and the atmosphere was bouncing, fair play 👍🏻 #NUFC #SWFC
