Sheffield Wednesday fans fight with Barnsley fans in home end during game against Carlisle

Sheffield Wednesday fans took to fight with Barnsley fans while in the home end at Oakwell during a League One game against Carlisle United.

Video footage has surfaced show what happened, with the Owls supporters soon being ejected out of the ground on Tuesday night.

It took place in the ‘Ponty End’ of the stadium, with stewards seen attending to the incident trying to calm the situation down.

A number of objects can be seen thrown at the Sheffield Wednesday fans by Barnsley supporters who chanted “Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire” at the time.

As the culprits head for the concourse, they are also pushed, leading to a group of fans running down the steps trying to get involved in the skirmish.

The game itself Barnsley come from behind to pick up a 2-1 victory against Carlisle, who went ahead through January signing Luke Armstrong on 7 minutes.

However Barnsley got themselves back in the game, with Devante Cole levelling on 58 minutes, before Herbie Kane converted from the spot on the verge of stoppage time.

Barnsley head coach Neill Collins said after the game, as per barnsleyfc.co.uk: “We were far from our best. It goes without saying, the performance levels were nowhere near. But to win when you’re not at your best is a really good trait to have. Not only to win, but to come from behind. The biggest traits the team showed this morning were character. There were a lot of tough nights out there individually, but they kept going.

“When you’re playing for a big club, I’ve been part of it as a player, it can be tough, it can be challenging. But, they all kept going and stuck together. We managed to get there in the end.”

He added to Yorkshire Post: “I didn’t expect that level of performance, I don’t know the exact reasons for it other than maybe we just had too many on an off night all at once.

“It was quite clear there were a lot of individual errors, they were pretty basic.

“There are obviously times when tactical adjustments can help but I think tonight it was more technical mistakes or (bad) decision-making.

“We got punished for it, could have been punished more for it, but ultimately the players just dug in, got to half-time and we were able to freshen it up.

“I think from half-time onwards while there were still some of the same errors they weren’t quite as bad and were able to give ourselves more of a foothold and scored a fantastic goal to get ourselves back in it, then went on and won it.

“We’ll probably have to try and learn couple of lessons and move on. Not many of those players have played like that before so hopefully we all learn from it and move on quickly.

“I look at my own experience of winning promotions and league titles and it happens. That’s one of the things that happen when you get promoted or finish high up, you win a couple when you’re not at your best because you tend to have the nous in the group and the resilience to do it.

“We’re always going to have to have a couple. You never want them, you never know when they’re coming.

“Let’s hope we improve our performance on Saturday because we’ll need to that. We don’t want too many more of them.”

“To come through like that on a bitterly cold night was something his side will benefit from.

“To win like that gives you confidence because you feel you’re never beaten.

“Coming in at half-time 1-0 I wanted to go mad because I wasn’t exactly enjoying it but I also had to think they’ll probably know that wasn’t good enough and the great thing is we’ve got an opportunity to go out and put it right. Had we done what we did in the first half in the second I wouldn’t have been able to help them or rectify it so maybe it was a good thing.

“It’s very easy when five or six are having a night like that to just compound it and end up in a complete disaster but they didn’t. They might not have shown some of the performance characteristics but the fans should be pleased that they kept at it.

“When it’s not going for you, keep going and they did that and we got there in the end.

“You can look at some of the negatives but you’ve got to look at some of the positives. We’ve come back again, from 1-0 down to win 2-1. It says a lot about the players.”.

Carlisle’s Paul Simpson said: “I think it was really cruel tonight,” he said. “You know me, when I think we haven’t done enough to get a result I’ll say it, but tonight we have done enough.

“I’m going to avoid talking about an official because that penalty decision was an embarrassing decision, absolutely embarrassing. I think there’s been so many things tonight that he hasn’t given in our favour. I think the less I say about it the better.

“We deserved something out of that game tonight. People can say we didn’t finish our chances again, and that’s a big part of it because in the first 13 minutes we had four incredible chances. One of those has to go in.

“We had a plan of how we wanted to try and press them which was very similar to Oxford at the weekend. I thought we won the ball well in good areas and had a good shape about us. The chances that Butts has had first half, you have to take one of them, it’s as simple as that. He’s done really well to get them, and I thought his header was an outstanding header that hit the post.

“We’re massively disappointed but the pleasing thing is, and the thing I’ve said to them in the dressing room, is that there’s been times where we’ve deserved nothing out of games, but tonight can give us a lot of belief and confidence.

“The challenge now is to do that every game. We can’t just do that at places like Barnsley because they’re up the top of the table, that’s the base. It hasn’t been the base for some games and that’s a choice that players have to make.

“I’m really pleased with what they’ve done tonight but I’m absolutely gutted for them that we haven’t got the rewards that we probably deserved.”

“We forced them into making mistakes and that was the plan,” he continued. “You have to force teams into mistakes, especially in the situation we’re in where we’re scrapping for our lives. I thought we pressed them really well and recovered back into a good shape when we needed to. I thought Alfie, Luke and Butts all did well to win it high.

“We’ve got nothing out of it but it’s a game I think we did deserve something out of. The honest truth is that hasn’t been the truth for all of the season so far.

On the penalty decision, he said: “It is really harsh. I’ve just looked back at it there. The annoying thing is, I kept talking to the fourth official and saying that the ref was going to cost us tonight with the decisions he was making. The fourth official kept saying ‘I agree with you Paul’, then that happens.

“Jordan Gibson has actually got his foot on the ball and the lad has gone down. It doesn’t look like a penalty to me, and I hope that the assessor who was here tonight takes the right sort of action against that. I saw it live and I’ve seen it back on the video and I still can’t believe he’s made that decision.

“We had some really good opportunities on transitions today and we haven’t had the quality to make that final pass. You look at their first goal, they won it back, played a brilliant pass into Devante Cole who took a great first touch and drilled it across the goal.

“We’ve been in areas to do that but we haven’t been able to, and that’s the difference. They’re able to find that pass with the quality they have when it really matters. We’ve got players with the ability to do it, but we’re not finding that pass or executing it properly.

“That’s where the first goal comes from, we’re on a transition and we could have dealt with it better. Even the second goal, I think we probably had three opportunities to clear the ball properly. We gave it away cheaply and allow them to keep the momentum. We’ve had chances to clear our lines, but it still doesn’t take away the fact that it was an absolutely disgusting decision from the official.”
