Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackburn in extraordinary game with outrageous and bizarre goals

Sheffield Wednesday picked up a huge win to beat Blackburn in an extraordinary game with some outrageous and bizarre goals at Ewood Park.

Blackburn went into Sunday’s fixture sitting 19th in Championship table and could have guaranteed safety with a win, while Sheffield Wednesday were second from bottom but a win would see them climb out of relegation zone.

And the first goal came just seven minutes in with the away side taking an early lead. Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears came way out of his area to deal with a long ball over the top, only his header to land straight to a Wednesday player, with it played to Josh Windass who lobbed home a first time finish from range, a stunning technique.

Sammie Szmodics hit back two minutes later, and with fantastic composure to finish brilliantly in front of goal, making it 31 goals for the season with a cool finish beyond James Beadle with the Owls defence caught out by a ball over the top.

Marvin Johnson pit Sheffield Wednesday back in front on 58 minutes after picking up possession on the halfway line and Anthony Musaba made his way down the right, sent a low cross to the back stick with Marvin Johnson putting it back across goal into the corner.

Then on 64 minutes, it was 3-1 to the Owls, Dominic Hyam played a square ball back across the area to his goalkeeper Aynsley Pears, but while under no pressure, he took a wild swipe at the ball, which bobbled up, hit the top of his foot and spun backwards into the net.

John Pearson (Former Sheffield Wednesday forward on BBC Radio Sheffield): “I am going to stand up for the goalkeeper a bit, that had an amazing bounce as he went to kick it. He caught it slightly but it’s spun into the net. The Gods are looking down on Sheffield Wednesday. That was a complete gift. Blackburn are going to throw everything at this now…”

John Pearson (Former Sheffield Wednesday forward on BBC Radio Sheffield): “For the first time all season we are out…

“It’s been immense – the support, the performance, every single person has played their part. It’s one of those days where everything has gone right for Wednesday.

“What a difference in the second half, big, big character and a big performance.

“It’s a massively tough game next Saturday but they all are, and Wednesday have responded big time.”

Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks told Sky Sports: “It was a battle, it wasn’t one for the purists, it was about winning – there was a lot of pressure on this game, especially having sat there watching the results come in yesterday afternoon.

“It felt like a home game with the fans there and the lads at the back, everyone to a man turned up today – it was a massive result in what was obviously a big game for us.”

On his 400th appearance for the club Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan told Sky Sports the 7,000 travelling fans had inspired his team to victory.

He said: “I’ve been here nine years, it doesn’t surprise me – they are amazing. That’s for them as well as us, they have followed us through thick and thin.

“I’ve got many more in me.

“This result adds to the confidence but nothing is done today. It’s one job done but we’ll get back to work because we know how big next week is.”
