After being asked where this achievement ranks in his career, he said in his press conference: āItās so tough to say.
“So when you coach Anderlecht in Belgium and you beat Standard Liege, itās such an emotional game. I donāt think the feeling is that much different, it gives you everything.
“I remember we beat Blackburn twice in Burnley. No one in this room will want to compare it to today, but it was amazing. It was something Iāve experienced so much as a player and this was incredible.
“Of course for Bayern Munich this game, itās an amazing feeling, but I don’t think you wait for Real Madrid to then say: āokay, this is going to be the best feelingā. You have to get it out of things and I try and live every moment as much as I can.
“Iām happy now, this is in the moment. But tomorrow we will focus on the next game and we will put it behind.ā
Kompany said per the club website: āThere were a lot of emotions in this match. We had a lot of possession and the feeling that we could score another goal. But theyāre incredibly fast and dangerous ā you can never completely relax against Real Madrid.
“I thought the boys were mentally very strong tonight. Iām proud that we came back twice. The fans helped us, and you always had the feeling the team would come back. You get these moments because youāve continually earned them over the season.
“The important thing for me is: the boys deserved to play without fear tonight. You canāt only just say that, you have to show it too. And they did that.
“Itās often details that decide whether we win or lose. Whatās crucial for me is that weāre not standing there after the game and asking ourselves: What was that about? But rather, we left everything out there.ā
Speaking toĀ TNT Sports after the game, Harry Kane said: “It is a reward for a lot of the hard work, not just by me but the team. It would not be possible without the players around me.
“For me, it is just about keeping it going. We still have six weeks left in a Bayern shirt and a World Cup in the summer. I just want to stay physically fit and sharp and be able help the team.
“I feel like whenever I get chances I am able to make the keeper work or get my shots off quickly. It was nice to get the goal today but I will do whatever it takes to help the team, scoring goals, assists, defending, I just enjoy being out there with these boys.”
On the match itself, Kane added: “It was a tough game. We knew it was going to be difficult. Real Madrid and the Champions League have this special connection and you need to be at the highest level to beat them and knock them out. I think we have done that.
“The first half was a little bit crazy. Obviously, getting off to the worst start possible. But we got back into the game well and looked like the team who were more dangerous. But they have players on the transition who can really hurt you and that is what punished us.
“In the second half we had to be more patient. We knew as the game went on we would get stronger and fitter and physically better and then we were able to take our chances at the end.”
Here’s how fans reacted after Vincent Kompany likens Bayern’s win over Real Madrid to Burnley doing the double over Blackburn…
@TurfCastPodcast: Beating Blackburn with Burnley > Beating Real Madrid with Bayern. He’s still Burnley
@LiamRyan06: Itās hard to not miss him.
@Rollins96021656: I noticed something last night about his team, they looked somewhat identical to Pepās team when they got to the final 3rd. No crossings unless clear, they prioritized penetrating with short passes & cutbacks just like City. They looked less comfortable with the ball though.
@chasbfcdarts: I’ve slated Kompany a lot, but that title winning season is probably the most fun I’ve had following Burnley and at least his team showed a bit of fight in their last few PL games
@j_marsh98: Didnāt need the reminder on a Thursday morning. Fuck off. #rovers
@TwisterTipster: Football always comes down to Rovers and Burnley – you can stick your Real Madrid up your arse š
@RoversXtra: Why are we getting bantered in the Champions League semi finals? Venkys you have blood on your hands
@AllyFogg: This guy just GETS IT like very few others.
@MilltownClarets: Go n win it Vinny lad!! respect !! šš never forget the greatest championship season we’ll probably ever see #twitterclarets
@chrisburnley35: Ya know what. He was class for us kompany, some of the best football I’ve ever seen. Great to see he still thinks this. Can’t wait for our game again next season. Up the clarets
@JacobHorsfall_: Can say what you want about the way he left, or the fact he left. But Kompany got it. Not once did we have the āus vs themā dilemma when he was here. Not once did he take digs at the fans (iirc). He got what Burnleyās culture as a club was about from top to bottom.
