Sheff Wed keeper’s two penalty saves in three mins while Crawley see spot kick save gone wrong

In this article, we take a look at a Sheff Wed keeper’s two penalty saves in three mins while Crawley see a spot kick save gone wrong.

Sheffield Wednesday shot stopper Cameron Dawson kept out two penalties in the first seven minutes of their 4-0 FA Cup Third Round victory over Cardiff City.

The 28 year old kept out Ryan Wintle and Callum Robinson from the spot after Josh Windass had put the hosts ahead on two minutes with a superb 30-yard effort.

The Owls then scored twice in two minutes just before the break as Romaine Sawyers conceded an own goal and then Liam Palmer made it 3-0 on 40 minutes.

Mallik Wilks grabbed Sheffield Wednesday’s fourth in added time, but much of the talk on social media was about those two penalty saves.

Danny Rohl said after the game: “Cameron has shown in the past that he is there. Today he has saved two penalties, it was great.

“I always protect my players and in the past when there were some mistakes – I think today he showed he is ready.

“It was a performance everyone will speak about, but we won’t speak about individuals, it was just the team. The team did the job we have to do and that’s it.”

Sheffield Wednesday have found form, with the result being their 6th win in nine games in all competitions and Rohl spoke more with Barry Bannan and Bailey Cadamarteri left out but kept their momentum going.

“For sure, it was for me clear,” he adds. “You always think after this tough period maybe some players need a rest.

“For me, it was about whether there was a risk and if there was we wouldn’t risk to play with some players.

“But my team did well for the result. It was OK, next round. Now it’s about keeping going, recovery and I’ve always spoken about the momentum. I want to keep this.”

Cardiff made six changes following their 2-1 win at QPR on New Year’s Day and in the absence of manager Erol Bulut, who had stayed at home due to illness, assistant Nikolaos Karydas was philosophical in defeat.

“Disappointed I cannot say because the result sometimes does not reflect the performance of the team,” assistant Nikolaos Karydas said, in for the absent Erol Bulut due to illness, with Cardiff making six changes following their 2-1 win at QPR.

“We saw many positive things, especially in the second half. I cannot say as an excuse we missed a lot of players.”

On his side’s two missed penalties, he added: “In football, you can expect anything. Even this is a part of the game.

“Maybe if we had scored the result would be opposite, but we have to accept it now and look forward to the next game.

“In football if you don’t score, you lose the game. You have to score. But we’ll say we are satisfied by the pictures that the players showed.”

Meanwhile, Corey Addai’s penalty save went horribly wrong as the ball span back into the goal against Bradford City.

The Red Devils side looked on course for defeat when Addai’s own goal put the Bantams 2-1 up on 79 minutes.

As can be seen in the videos, he had initially appeared to have save Andy Cook’s penalty.

However, much to the frustration of Addai, the ball squirms under him and as it rolls towards the goal, he tried to reach out and claw it back, only to practically punch it over the line.

Addai was left thankfully relieved when a dramatic late on, Adam Campbell levelled five minutes from time and then Orsi and Lolos netted deep into stoppage time to see Crawley win 4-2.

Crawley coming back from 2-1 down to snatch a late 4-2 win at Valley Parade see them move up to 9th in the League Two table, while Bradford fall to 14th.

Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey said, as per Sussex World: “I remember pre-season, we had a meeting and we spoke about having a good group of players, a good dressing room and to tidy things up when players are not being professional, other players pull them into line and having the togetherness,” said Lindsey. “I spoke about how important that is and how it can win you games and it can win you titles.

“And we have got that. I have made sure that I manage that and the players are not loose with their professionalism, they’re not late, they work hard, they stick to their programmes, excellent on the training ground, excellent in the meetings and we have built that.

“We are a small club and it’s important we have that togetherness, not just me and the staff and the players but the fans as well. The owners, the support staff has that real togetherness and we can achieve something if we can do that.”

On the game, Lindsey said: “Big victory of course, we are really pleased with that. We showed unbelievable character today and sometimes that wins you games, having that real togetherness.

“We weren’t at our best and we knew that and they are a really good side. They asked a lot of questions and they put a lot of balls in our box and we defended brilliantly and resiliently throughout. We kept going and kept believing we could get something from the game.

“When we brought it back level again we had that endeavour to keep going on to win the game.”

Bradford City boss Graham Alexander said: “I am devastated that we have lost the game.

“It was another game where we were the dominant team, but we put ourselves under pressure with the first goal we conceded.

“We responded really well to it, and grew into the game.

“We went away from what we have done so well in recent times, which is playing on the front foot.

“That is a big lesson for us to understand what went wrong.

“We have to have discipline; trust our training and the way we want to do things.

“It is an age-old thing in football that you are clock watching, drop back and not do the things we have been doing so well. That is not our way.

“Any team can win in football.

“The best teams are those that have a strong attacking identity.

“The minutes between us scoring to make it 2-1 and the end of the match, we did not have our identity.

“I have been trying to emphasise that just because we have won six on the bounce, that does not mean to say we can relax.

“We have done that in the last few games, and we have to get back to where we were.”
