Seamus Coleman ‘deserves better’ as majority of Everton fans decide not to stay for his farewell

Seamus Coleman ‘deserves better’ as majority of Everton fans decide not to stay for his farewell, frustrated by the 3-1 defeat to Sunderland.

Merlin Rohl had Everton in front just before half time, but then the Toffees suffered quite the second half collapse when Sunderland netted three times, Brian Brobbey (59′), Enzo le Fee (81′) and Wilson Isidor (90+1′).

Earlier in the week, Seamus Coleman sent an emotional message to fans in a video published as he ends a 17-year playing career with Everton.

But it seems the majority of those in the stadium had left before his on-pitch goodbye after the final whistle.

The video has since gone viral on social media, with many fans saying Seamus Coleman ‘deserves better’ as majority of Everton fans decide not to stay for his farewell…

@FranMallon1: Jaysus Everton fans, I know you’ve just lost but could ye not hang around to bid farewell to a club legend

@ALANMYERSMEDIA: Really felt for Seamus, he deserved better, don’t blame fans for leaving after that performance at all tbh though (I didn’t know the guard of honour was even going to happen) glad that those still there made a good noise

@andrewlaniganla: He’s been there 17 years and about 10% of the stadium is there. Thats embarrassing from Everton fans.

@N_Macca74: That’s really poor from Everton fans, club legend and barely a few thousand have stayed behind to wave him off.

@nismoneil: Pity most fans had left the stadium after another Moyes masterclass.

@LWalterini1898: That is absolutely shocking from the Everton fans, I get that they lost but for only that amount to stay behind for him considering how long he has been there, piss poor

@linehan_karl: That’s embarrassing. 17 years service and they couldn’t hang around for 15 minutes. It’s no wonder the club are where they are with that kind of fanbase

@NilSatisNews: Heartbreaking this 💔 17 years of loyalty, dedication, class & commitment to say goodbye to a half empty stadium. You can only blame the players & the manager for this, not the fans who left.

Everton boss David Moyes said to Sky Sports, per BBC Sport’s live blog:

“We didn’t look like a European team at times today that’s for sure. Things didn’t go for us. We lost a poor first goal, got back in the game, looked more likely to score then gave away a second goal. Tried to find our way back. Players have done an amazing job at times but it wasn’t there today.

“If I look back maybe the last four or five games we’ve played quite well but not really got over the line. There’s some poor decisions that have gone against us and Sunderland kept at their job and we didn’t. They got the victory.”

“We messed up big time today. Opportunity where if we’d won it things would be a lot different. We looked more likely at half time, didn’t start second half well but thought if anyone would score after that it would be us.

“Everton have not had the opportunity to get in the top end of the league table for a while. I’m more disappointed that they have missed that opportunity to keep pushing on. Today showed that we are probably not quite ready.”

On Seamus Coleman: “Never in doubt that he would get that reception because of what he’s done here. Seamus will be the first to say he’s more interested in the team, how the club do. He’ll be as disappointed as we are that that game today – last farewell in front of the Everton supporters, final farewell – that we didn’t get a victory.”

Sunderland’s Regis le Bris said to Sky Sports: “The first half was OK, not bad, but we didn’t threaten the opponent’s defence enough and conceded a goal on a set piece. Second half more ambitious, taking more risks and the subs helped. It was the most important statement at this stage in the season, that the group is still a unit. It’s never easy, two games before the end to keep everyone aligned but this was the case. So I’m really pleased by the subs as well.

“We are becoming ambitious. It’s reality now because we have one more game and we have the opportunity to achieve something really special. Now it’s just a final and we’ll see.

“It’s the club and the team, the staff and the direction we are really well-aligned. It makes a difference at the end so I’m proud of that.

“Our fans were loud today so I imagine they will be louder next week. They deserve it, they are always really supportive. We have highs and lows and they were still behind us. I hope that we can enjoy the last fixture at home.”

His message to players for next week? “Consistency, standards and ready to be competitive. You have to manage the expected and also the unexpected. If you are ready and prepare well you give yourself the best chance to be successful. Consistency, team work and connections.”
