Scunthorpe appoint new manager who won four promotions in last five seasons

Scunthorpe United appoint of new manager Jimmy Dean, who as won four promotions in the last five seasons at Peterborough Sports.

He had an impressive seven seasons at Peterborough Sports, including four promotions from the five campaigns not disrupted by Covid.

In September 2022, Nelson returned to Scunthorpe United to assist interim manager Tony Daws, but late November, Daws stepped down to return to his role as academy manager with Nelson becoming interim manager.

SCUNTHORPE STATEMENT

Scunthorpe United is delighted to confirm our new management team, as Jimmy Dean joins as the club’s new First Team Manager, Chris Plummer arrives as Assistant Manager and Michael Nelson remains with the Iron as Head Coach.

Dean, 40, joins following a hugely successful spell at National League North side Peterborough Sports, where he enjoyed four promotions in five completed seasons.

He steered them to three titles and 11 trophies in total since becoming manager in 2015, and has been widely acclaimed for his excellent work there, being hailed as one of the best bosses in non-league.

Plummer, 46, was his assistant at Peterborough Sports and will join Dean at Glanford Park. A former England Under-21 international, his playing days saw a lengthy spell at QPR, as well as permanent stints at Barnet and Peterborough United.

During his coaching career, he’s managed Peterborough Northern Star, Corby Town and Peterborough Sports, in addition to being part of the England Under-21s set-up.

Nelson, 42, was interim first team manager at the Iron from late November and previously assisted Tony Daws for three months.

He enjoyed a long playing career, including a year’s spell at United from 2011, and has previously managed Blyth Spartans, as well as being assistant boss at Hartlepool United.

PETERBOROUGH SPORTS STATEMENT

The club can tonight confirm that Jimmy Dean has left the club to take up another role. This role is a full time job and Jimmy was at their game today and his appointment will be announced shortly. Chris Plummer will be joining him as well.

Jimmy has been so crucial to the club’s progress from step 6 and that rise was bound to attract attention far and wide. He has been the subject of approaches in the past but has remained loyal to Sports. He is a Peterborough man at heart and it needed a special opportunity to tempt him.

We had a long discussion on Thursday when he remained torn but I advised him this was just too good a chance to turn down and that he should accept it with mine and the whole club’s blessing.

As you will have seen today Michael Gash has taken charge of the team on an interim basis ably assisted by Dan Ruscillo and the club will consider its plans for the longer term when we have had a chance to discuss more.

This has been a fantastic era for the club which we should cherish but we need to look forward. After a long period in charge a change may cause some uncertainty but I ask you Turbines to back the team more than ever.

Jimmy remains a true friend and I wish him and Michelle all the very best and it remains without saying they will always be welcome at The Bee Arena.
