Scotland’s Ryan Christie has fans in tears with his emotional post-match interview following a win on penalties against Serbia on Thursday.
The attacking midfielder just showed what securing Euro 2020 qualification for his country meant to him, with Scotland heading to their first major tournament in 22-years.
Christie spoke to Sky Sports after the match, and summed up how fans across Scotland were feeling after watching the team battle to a hard-earned, yet nervy and tense penalty shootout victory.
“I hope everyone back home is having a party tonight!” ?

Scotland’s Ryan Christie said in the interview: “When you’re on the pitch you always feel like you can impact it. The moment you’re off, you can’t watch. It’s horrible. Those penalties are probably the worst thing I’ve ever been through.
“Just for the whole nation it’s been a horrible year for everyone. We knew coming into the game we could give a little something to this country, and we hope everyone back home is having a party tonight. We deserve it.
“What we’ve been through. It’s been so many years. You know it. We know it. Everyone knows it. It’s the monkey off the back now and we’re just going to move on from here.”
Scotland put their fans through the emotions as Steve Clarke’s men were two minutes away from a 1-0 win in normal time after Ryan Christie’s goal, but a Luka Jovic injury-time equaliser forced the tie to extra-time.
Clarke took off his three most influential players in QPR’s Lyndon Dykes, Aston Villa’s John McGinn and Celtic’s Ryan Christie before Serbia got a late dramatic equaliser and Scotland lost their spark in extra-time, however held on to take the game to penalties, winning 5-4.
Scotland’s reward for the win in Belgrade is a place in Group D alongside England, Croatia and Czech Republic

“That’s the difference… That’s what it means to this nation.” – @blueskiesecho
Brilliant and shows the difference between Scotland and England. Raw emotion, happy for a nation. Your Harry Kane and Calum Hudson-River or Dominic Calvin-Klein “just take each game as it comes, doing it for the gaffer, happy to play 9 minutes and make a few runs”.
