Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney hit back at those who think ‘they’ll get bored’ at Wrexham, having their say on the matter.
The duo say that they won’t get bored as they create a “sustainable business” at the newly promoted club, who returned to the EFL after a 15-year hiatus, as the investment of the two actors in the Welsh club has paid off handsomely.
Since taking over, the pair have spent a lot of money on improving the infrastructure and the team under manager Phil Parkinson with reports suggesting that they’ve spent over £10million.
Wrexham are expected to continue to improve this summer to be able to challenge for promotion in League Two next season.
Reynolds and McElhenney say they were serious about their failed attempt to bring Gareth Bale out of retirement and play for Wrexham. However, they insist that they won’t be writing cheques to keep the club’s business afloat.
‘I find it fascinating there are people who assume this could ever be boring in any stretch of the imagination,’ said McElhenney, speaking on the Fearless in Devotion podcast.
‘The things we have done and felt in the last two-and-a-half years just don’t exist in our worlds – or any world that I can think of.
‘So getting bored would never be on the list of things that would happen.
‘But I also think about any cynicism or criticism that we might get, that is simply by nature just not creative in any way or helpful in any way, is generally just a reflection of how someone is feeling about themselves or something they may have gone through in their life.’
Reynolds is clear that he wants to take Wrexham to the Premier League and admitted that his involvement in football has become an ‘addiction’.
He said: ‘We don’t pretend it’s just salad days ahead. It’s a journey.
‘It’s making sure that no matter what we do as stewards of this club we are avoiding stasis or backtracking at all cost.
‘That can sometimes happen, at least from when I’ve observed other clubs, you can get in this cycle where you’re just keeping your head above water.
‘So we always want to be on that inexorable march forward, not just as a club but as a community, and Rob and I love Wrexham about as much as two human beings could love anything on this planet.’
McElhenney said: ‘From the beginning we’ve been talking about what our short-term strategy is and what our long-term strategy is because we’ve always said we want to build a sustainable business.
‘We look at the entire club as a massive investment – an investment in the club, town and future.
‘And neither one of us wants to put ourselves or the club in a position where any one of us are just writing cheques to keep the business of the club afloat.
‘Everything we’ve done since we’ve come in is to ensure no matter who comes in – and hopefully it’s us for the rest of our lives – we are building a sustainable business. Whatever that might mean in the future, who’s to say?’
Reynolds said: ‘Almost the next day I was so excited to dig in to what’s next for the club, which I’m proud to say and deeply regretful to say because I should have enjoyed that moment, which I did.
‘But I’m so excited to repeat that feeling as much as possible and just grow, grow, grow as big as we can possibly get and continue to deliver.
‘The great moments we’ve had so far do not exist without the bad. That’s football.
‘It’s a heartbreaking sport and I’m addicted to it now and you have to have both.’

This is what fans said as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney hit back at those who think ‘they’ll get bored’ at Wrexham…
@arransadventures7319: I’m scottish, a massive sunny fan and Ryan Reynolds fan and already had a soft spot for Wrexham. Due to my auntie living there before she moved back to Scotland and unfortunately passed away. These guys taking over blew my interest into the stratosphere. I support a club called Motherwell. We’re fan owned, the first top flight club in Britain to be completely fan owned. Watching the documentary I’m blown away by the similarities in both our Clubs. Both had owners that ran us into the ground, both are only still here due to the commitment of the fans. I don’t think we’d ever sell the society to anyone but if Rob and Ryan wanted to include us in their rumoured Footballing family of clubs I’d fight tooth and nail to allow it. Brilliant men. They get it.
@ZeScorpion: As a West Ham fan, the fact you guys got the owners of your club to sit down for 45 minutes to do a podcast with fans fills me with both awe & jealousy..! Wrexham have been blessed & are certainly my second team from here on in. Delighted for you, long may it continue..! 🍻
@johnsearing9736: Huge wrexham fan here in Florida. Let me please say this, the number one reason I fell in love with the team wasn’t bc of the team. It was it’s people . The love and passion and fight the fans have to protect their beloved team spoke so many volumes to me . There is just nothing really like that here in the states. I can’t recall a single team saved by it’s fans. Thank you to the people of wrexham for keeping that history alive long enough for rob and Ryan to help towards the future. Much love from Florida.
@TheWelshSportsPodcast: Shows the class Rob and Ryan have to spend their time to speak on a fans podcast for nearly an hour. Amazing to see what they are doing for Wrexham and north Wales in general. The passion is clearly real and genuine
@glynnc48: As a Notts fan, I’m looking forward to seeing how we both do next season. Bookies think we’re both good for promotion and I have to agree. Let’s hope for a replay of this season, except this time we’re both up already in March 🙂
@richardhughes3196: What a ride we’re on! The jealousy of wrexham is only going to grow seeing more and more the unbelievable job these guys are doing and how genuine they are. Another fantastic pod FiD team, looking forward to the fanzine
@gerryriley915: OMG… how good was that!! Awesome to hear Rob and Ryan speak so passionately and openly about their love and pride for everything Wrexham. And be humble enough to thank you guys for being the voice of the fans and holding them to account. Terrific stuff lads. Looking forward to getting my hands on Raising Dragons. ❤🏴
@steverowe2758: We love the whole journey Wrexham have been on in Brisbane, Australia. The power of sport to lift a community is inspiring and the goodwill towards Notts and other clubs in the league is a lesson to us all. Without quality opposition success means little. Go Wrexham!
