Ruben Amorim describes his Man Utd team as “maybe the worst” in it’s history after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
It was United’s fourth loss in their last five home Premier League games, and they’ve only picked up 11 points in 11 league games since Amorim came in as replacement for Erik ten Hag in November.
The result means Man Utd currently sit 13th in the table – 10 points clear of the drop zone but seven behind Fulham who are 10th.
“In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two,” said Amorim. “Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me.
“We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”
Leon Osman said while on BBC Match of the Day: “It was a really bold statement from Ruben Amorim. Their starting XI cost £391m, their five summer signings cost £182m.
“I would not enjoy being called out like this. No one wants to be known as the worst team to ever play for the cub. He’s probably honest and on the mark.”
“We are being the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.” 😮

Amorim added that he’s not “naive” and understands the pressure he is under, and while he’ll not change his successful 3-4-3 formation, he admits his players are struggling to adapt to it.
“I knew that was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard,” he said.
“Everybody here is underperforming and we have to accept that. It is unacceptable to lose so many games. The opponents are better than us in many details.
“We cannot be consistent and I’m not helping my players in the moment. You have to acknowledge we are in a very difficult situation, with all the bad records, as losing games at home, losing games in the Premier League.
“I know we can succeed but I am not naive. We need to survive this moment. But I am not going to change, no matter what.”
Ruben Amorim, speaking to Sky Sports: “Another loss at home and it’s not acceptable. We can play some football but in small spaces of time, it’s not consistent. We get nervous and suffer a goal and then it’s hard to turn things around.
“We get really anxious and really nervous. You could feel it in the stadium but we can’t end games like that. No matter the result we have to be a different team in all aspects.
“Brighton were comfortable, we tried with not very good football. We lost again at home and that’s not acceptable. We need to change that fast.”
On whether it will be like this for a while: “It is clear. I’m not going to change how I see the game, I’m clear on that.
“The players are going to suffer, the fans are going to suffer, I’m sorry. I have one way of doing things but we need to survive this moment. It’s very clear for everybody what we are going to do.”

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, speaking to BBC Match Of The Day: “I’m very happy and proud for the team because they showed commitment this week. They got what they deserved today, they did the details right and the small details to get the result.
“After we scored the opening goal we were a bit passive, we had good structure and were a danger but we changed things for the second half to have more structure in possession.
“To have balance between defensive stability and structure with the ball is very important. The team was mature today.
“It’s a very big club with big tradition and Manchester United was a club I followed through my career but it’s important to stay humble and grounded because I also had bad times in my career. Getting consistency in results only comes by working hard.”
Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, speaking to BBC MOTD: “We started well and then lost a bit of shape and structure, allowed them to get the goal back but we reacted well and raised the intensity.
“We stepped off a bit too much in the first half but we picked up again in the second.
“It has been a frustrating period but it’s nice to feel that winning feeling again. We want to be on a good run and back in a good position.
“We’ve had three massive games this week and three big wins.”
On the change in mentality to win three in a row at Old Trafford: “We’re a different team than when we first came up. We used to just try and stay in the league and now we are competing. We have picked up some good results here but now we move on to the next one.”
Fans reacted as Ruben Amorim describes his Man Utd team as “the worst” in it’s history after defeat to Brighton…
@davymack47: He’s got that fucking right!!!! EASILY the worst I’ve seen since Dave Sexton’s team!! This lot can’t even do the basics!!!
@CraigBolt200: This is exactly what we need, no hiding behind anything, saying it how it is. Amorim knows who he can and can’t trust now – major rebuild HAS to happen! 👊🏽 #MUFC
@conoreynon: 😂😂 at least this one speaks sense
@LLF_WHU: At least he don’t talk shit and make excuses. Something seriously wrong with Man Utd
@Jonvader: He has my support at this time 100 percent. One reason is he is keeping it honest and not pretending that things are better than they are. And once he continues to be ruthless, I think we can be better and maybe next season see us get back competing for top honors.
@GarethH04231834: Not the worst – I’m old enough to remember the pre-Fergie years, back to the early 70s. He has a mammoth job on – root & branch – whilst the club want trophies and tours of Asia and the US.
@garymufc7: This guy has balls! Quality manager who swears by his system but has players to whom refuse change. By a country mile, Amad is United’s stand-out player along with Maguire. Things have to change quickly as these players are placing each under a bus.
@jamie_pragnell: Every team that has a crap run of defeats still manages to beat #saintsfc in the middle of it, shows how poor we really are at the bottom of the table…..
@acid_matt: 74 worse.
@tristandross: love how every week this guy comes out and says “we are unprecedentedly shit, the players are fucking crap, the fans are ugly, the board are clueless, i’m a moron and we need to be honest about that” as if this will improve anything
@FightTezaFight: Fair play to him. Honestly the only people in that squad that are even good enough are Fernandes, Mainoo, Yoro, Garnacho, Rasmus & Amad & some of them aren’t even starting quality. I don’t know what United can do unless they go on a spending spree like Chelsea & luck into it.
@al_henny: He’s not far wrong and it’s not his fault he’s inherited incompetence, cowardly weak mentality player’s there will probably be only 3 or 4 from the current squad that survive, the rest won’t be missed @ManUtd @INEOS @OmarBerrada please back this manager properly, he is the one
@billericaybaggy: Another arrogant manager that’s doomed.
@D_J_Gibson: Sounds just like Hen Taag did. “I am not going to change”, “We have to be better”. Something very weird going on at that club
