Roy Keane tears into England as Gareth Southgate speaks out on boos from fans in bore draw to USA

Roy Keane tears into England as Gareth Southgate speaks out on the boos heard from fans in the bore draw to USA on Friday night.

England was closer to the World Cup knockout round with a 0-0 draw against the United States, but their disappointing performance was a setback. They will now have to wait until Tuesday’s game against Wales to secure a spot.

England will be eliminated by Wales if they lose by four goals or less. Southgate will face questions about his team’s performance, and how they can improve for the business phase.

Their supporters were optimistic after England beat Iran 6-2 in their first fixture in Qatar. This was a result that was reminiscent of their Euros run last summer. However, there was booing from the travelling fans as Gareth Southgate’s team lost the pace and became disjointed in the face of an enthusiastic US team.

Christian Pulisic’s first-half shot hit the bar, and Harry Maguire had the task of navigating a series corners as the Americans increased their pressure in the second. Although there was no way to replicate the 1950 upset, USA did enough in the second half to change perceptions and increase their hopes of progressing.

Harry Kane’s block shot at the beginning of the match, and his header wide from Luke Shaw’s free-kick during the second-half stoppage time were as close as the toothless Three Lions attack came in troubling USA during an alarming (if not immediately damaging) performance.

USA currently sits third in Group B, one point behind Iran who they will face on Tuesday. They would be in the final 16 if they win.

Roy Keane was left baffled by Gareth Southgate’s decision not to bring on or even start Phil Foden in England’s drab draw with the USA.

He said on ITV : “We were surprised watching it, Gareth will have his reasons he sees them more than anybody but we’re stood watching the game expecting Foden to come on. The subs that did come on, didn’t have an impact, they done well the other day but they looked leggy, short of ideas, from set-pieces, they didn’t look like a goal in their locker. A terrible performance.”

Gary Neville replied: “I was disappointed not to see Foden, for me that talent is huge. We’ve got Bellingham, Grealish but Southgate prefers Mount, Saka, Sterling, for me Foden not to be amongst that and not to come off the bench was interesting.”

Southgate explained that he felt Grealish and Rashford would give them a fresh dynamic in attack. “I thought it was the right thing to keep the team from the start then the wide players we went with Jack and Marcus ahead of Phil for the changes,” said the England boss.

“Jack, can keep the ball well for us and get us up the pitch, Marcus’ speed we thought would be a threat going into the last part of the game.” England’s draw with the US leaves them on four points from the two games – and in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages ahead of their clash with Wales next week. Despite that, Keane continued to be scathing whilst giving his verdict on the Three Lions.

He added: “I think from England’s mindset, the result is fine but the performance was poor and you’re looking at England with the quality they have, have that make up to go after a game but they’re in control. Good result but really poor performance.”

Neville also claimed: “Tournaments are barely a bed of roses, Gareth has unbelievable tournament experience and will realise we will get through this group. But it was poor, we’re all disappointed, we expected a lot more.”

Keane said on ITV ahead of Friday night’s match vs the USA: “They’ve had a good start, six goals. I never believe all that nonsense about team spirit; I never hear a manager or in the media say there’s a bad spirit in the group.

“There should be after the game and three or four days, they look happy, playing game of darts, they’re going to be upbeat. The most important thing is winning football matches, lets see if they’ll laugh in a couple of weeks.”

But, Neville disagreed and insisted that the spirit throughout the group and beyond the starting players was important: “In a tournament when you’ve got 26 players, 15 of them on the bench, eight of them might not even play, you do need a good group. It can bring group down but the lads who are not playing as important as the lads who are playing.”

Gareth Southgate believed England showed some of the different qualities needed in tournament football during the 0-0 draw with the USA.

Southgate said: “It was exactly the sort of game I thought it would be, really tough. A good opponent, they’re very, very athletic. I knew it would be difficult for us after such a high (against Iran) to then replicate that type of performance.

“I’m really pleased with how the players have applied themselves. Some of our quality in the final third could have been a little bit better but we’ve shown great resilience to defend against an opponent that kept asking questions. We controlled the game from the back but couldn’t really open up for that really clear-cut chance.”

When asked what was missing, he added: “A little bit of zip. We didn’t quite have that same zip. That’s going to happen, this is tournament football. We’re not going to roll through a tournament and sweep through without having nights like that when you have to show different qualities to get a result.”

Southgate said: “Silver medal today was a point because it puts us in a really strong position in terms of qualification. If we can win our last game, we win the group. The objective is to get out of the group, we’ve got three games to do it. We’ve done it in two games in the last two tournaments, it’s very unrealistic to expect that every time.”

He continued: “Wales will be a totally different game. Today we played a team that make it really difficult.

“I am so pleased with the way we built from the back and they make it really difficult to build. We have had problems with that in the past. Our two centre-backs with the ball were absolutely outstanding. I don’t think people appreciate how good they are and they defended their box brilliantly.”

@samsayswassup: Roy Keane does have a way with words! You either laugh with him or roll your eyes, but I find him so funny! Love him or loathe him, the man gets what he wants said and you can’t misunderstand it.

@bigscottlee: #RoyKeane there’s never a pundit who openly says what he thinks like Roy Keane if your shit your shit no beating round the bush don’t try tarting it up your shit it’s that simple. Many more need to be like Roy. 🐐

@markshaw: People love Roy Keane because far too many people make things far too complex. He cuts through all the bullshit, all the nonsense & makes things super simple. Exactly as they should be. #WorldCup #WorldcupQatar2022 #WorldCup2022

@EdSpencer99: Thank God that Roy Keane managed to cut through the bs excuses that followed that utter dergefest. Best pundit in sport at present, along with Martin Brundle #ENGUSA

@Mike_TnC: Roy Keane once again providing the only entertainment of the night.

@librarianth: Amazing how Gary Neville and Roy Keane know EXACTLY what Southgate should do to win considering that, between them, they have the most appalling & humiliating management record you could possible imagine

@MichaelShotton4: Looking forward to Roy Keane’ absolutely scathing analysis of how drab Southgate is. I hope to god he gets the hard questions asked after this game. Utter, utter shite. #ENGUSA

@RyanCurrie89: #RoyKeane never change.. “can make up all the excuses in the world, they could say they were playing darts last” @IanWright0 was in 😂😂😂

@Boyle_67: Convinced all the other punts are trying to annoy Roy Keane, not a chance he makes it through the next 3 weeks without strangling somebody 😂

@jaredwright17: Can we get Roy Keane commentating on rugby? 🙏

@Misstennistits: Fucking love Roy Keane..says as it is type man..funny as fuck

@marlow08: #Roykeane Roy needs to be on a comedy panel show, he is a low key comedic legend

@jpxan71: #ENGUSA Roy Keane being a fucking ledg as always, “sit here all night and make excuses… they were playing darts last night”

@NadineOHare2: Roy Keane quality on itv as always!! Speaking the truth.

@emilyhewertson: Southgate out

@Modmuffin: Gareth Southgate wears a life jacket when he has a bath…

@BreezyUTD: This a prime example of why the England national team will never succeed under Southgate. He has no idea what his squad is actually capable of

@MeakinSamuel: I don’t care what anyone says, Gareth Southgate’s tactics are absolutely awful. So passive and unimaginative. We have the players to play exciting, attacking, pressing football and just sit back. The international Steve Bruce 😴

@theredslaaa: pep picks foden week in week out, klopp chooses trent week in week out, but don’t worry, southgate knows what he’s doing

@agbnufc_: Southgate has that Bruce trait of reacting 20 minutes after the entire nation can see a Mount > Foden sub is needed. His in-game management is non-existent when plan A doesn’t work.

@sammufc09: The fact that Foden is STILL on the bench when Mount is literally putting in a 0/10 performance is crazy. That’s Southgate for you. #FIFAWorldCup

@the_pieface: Does Southgate know Phil Foden is English?

@UtdFaithfuls: Every single person that watched the game could see that Foden had to come on for Mount except Southgate. He is the reason this talented England squad will never win anything.

@cantseyy: Southgate is cautious and stupid. If he won the lottery he’d eat the ticket to keep it safe. Make history and sack him immediately.

@Biggies_MaIIs: Imagine going from having Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola harnessing your generational talent and telling you how good you are to sitting on the bench behind Gareth Southgate watching 95 minutes of turgid shite. Trent and Foden must be wondering what the fuck is going on 😂

@DonHusam6: Ultimately, Southgate is a failure. Until he grows a pair of balls and actually takes risks he ain’t ever gonna win anything with England. Trent, Foden & Callum Wilson all stayed on the bench when you needed 3 pts. 0 risk taking.

@NathanBuddle: Southgate failing to utilise the talent at his disposal again will cost us. Just can’t make the tactical decisions when it matters and that’s saying something considering we’ve been to a semi of a world cup and final of euros in the last 2 tournaments 😅🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@jackbarrettmufc: This has been an appalling performance from England. England have th talent to be smashing this lot, and they have played terribly. This is why there was so much criticism of Southgate. We are wasting this talent. #WorldCup

@ZakKnowsBall: Foden and Maddison have seen 0 minutes combined this match whereas Mount completed the full 90. Southgate needs to be put on trial for crimes against humanity

@PWSW19: Southgate pissed off with a 6-2 victory because we conceded 2 goals but is buzzing with a 0-0 draw against the US A😂 all the players happy with the clean sheet, that’s Southgate talking 😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@MarcRReal: Gareth Southgate is one of (if not the only) manager who would have Foden at his disposal, but stick him on the bench and then keep him on the bench for a game crying out for a player like foden and instead bring on Henderson #southgateout #England

@maS_retraC: The fact that England have drawn with the USA and Phil Foden and Trent Alexander Arnold have been sat on the bench all evening really needs to raise questions about Gareth Southgate’s ability as England manager
