Roy Keane gives bitter response to Steven Gerrard winning title with Rangers

Roy Keane gives a bitter response live on Sky Sports to Steven Gerrard winning the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers on Sunday.

Graeme Souness chose to congratulate the Liverpool legend after the Gers were crowned the new champions of Scotland because Celtic could only draw 0-0 with Dundee United.

However when the question was put to Roy Keane on a celebratory message for Steven Gerrard and Rangers, he simply refused to do the same, yet it’s not uncommon to see clubs congratulate their rivals on promotion or winning the title.

Gerrard has produced one hell of an impressive season as manager of the Scottish club, and after 32 games, Rangers have won 28 games, drawn four, and lost none. They have scored 77 goals and conceded just nine, yielding an incredible goal difference of +68 in the process.

Their 88 points from 32 games is a stunning achievement and it becomes Rangers’ first title in 10 years, and their first since entering administration and being relegated to the bottom of the Scottish football pyramid.

They could even end the season unbeaten, matching Celtic’s Invincible season of 2016/17 under Brendan Rodgers, and I’m sure Gerrard will be hoping to achieve that.

Souness, who was a Rangers fan as a boy, managed them for 261 matches in all competitions, and is a Liverpool legend for his role in the teams of 1980s, congratulated Gerrard after the achievement was confirmed.

“Delighted for Steven Gerrard and all his team” he said on Sky Sports. “Celtic have had a period of dominance, which has been, I’ll say, uncomfortable for us Rangers supporters.”

He added: “They thoroughly deserve it. They’ve been fantastic all season and I just wish I was in Glasgow right now.”

Roy Keane was asked if he had a message of congratulations for Steven Gerrard and Rangers, he jokingly said: “For Rangers? No.

“Listen, obviously it’s been a tough year for Celtic, but they’ll bounce back like all great clubs do.”

On Gerrard, Souness said: “He’s been fantastic. He’s worked away quietly, this is his third year. Nothing was going to happen overnight for him simply because of where Rangers have been.

“It’s been a slow burn, he’s got them back and now they’re reaping the rewards of all the hard work from him and his staff and the work the players have put in. I’m delighted for everybody who’s connected to Rangers Football Club.”

Liverpool were quick to send a message of congratulations from the club, tweeting: “Congratulations from all of us at #LFC to Steven Gerrard and his team on winning the Scottish Premier League title.”

OTHER REACTION:

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher: “They must have been terrified for years that record [nine straight titles] would have been beaten by Celtic. When Gerrard came in, that was the name of the game to stop Celtic achieving that. They’ve come a long way, but they’ll be hoping the glory days are back.”

Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch: “It’s been a little bit emotional; 10 years is a long time to wait. Every Rangers fan all around the world will be celebrating this tonight.

“The club hit rock bottom. It’s been a slow climb back up but today is all about Steven Gerrard and his squad. The changes Steven has made, the leadership he’s shown, the recruitment, on and off the pitch the club has been fantastic.”

Former Rangers captain David Weir: “To wrap it up so early with such a points gap is a credit to the players and staff. The level of consistency has been incredible. Great credit to Steven Gerrard for the team he’s built and the players for taking it on. To finally get the title back to Ibrox is a massive relief and a massive joy for everyone at the club.”

Stuart McCall, Former Motherwell and Rangers manager on Sportsound: A great day for Rangers, naturally. Steven’s had two really good European campaigns and currently in the third one. They’ve been slowly building and that’s what managers need – they need time. He’s been given that. It’s been a long 10 years and it’s been a tough 10 years for Rangers supporters

Scottish Professional Football League chief executive Neil Doncaster has issued a statement in light of Rangers’ title win.

“I would like to warmly congratulate Rangers, their players, management team and directors,” he says.

“This has been a season like no other and Rangers deserve real praise for performing at such a consistently high level for so long. They are undoubtedly deserving champions.

“There are still a number of major issues to be settled this season, including European places, top-six finishes and, of course, relegation. We are looking forward to an exciting run-in to the end of the season.”

Former Rangers captain David Weir on Sportsound: “Well deserved. To wrap it up so early with such a points gap is a credit to the players and staff. The level of consistency has been incredible.
