Rotherham consider move for League One boss as they interview list of candidates

Rotherham United consider a move for League One boss Mark Bonner as they interview a list of candidates to be Paul Warne’s successor.

The 49-year-old made the decision to complete a move to Derby County, leaving the Millers, who have enjoyed an excellent start to the new Championship campaign, sitting eighth in the second tier standings and are a just a point outside the playoff positions.

Alex Crook reported on Twitter on Tuesday evening that Cambridge United boss Mark Bonner was emerging as a ‘serious contender’ for the vacant role at the New York Stadium.

Journalist Alan Biggs issued an update, stating that the U’s boss was interviewed by the Championship outfit on Tuesday, along with an unknown number of other candidates.

Cambridge hope they don’t end up losing Bonner, who has been outstanding since he was appointed back in 2020, including guiding the side to promotion, with his side sitting just one point and one place outside the playoffs at this early stage of the campaign.

Bonner also ‘fits the bill’ in terms of the type of profile that Millers chairman Tony Stewart has said he wanted, with a young, up-and-coming type the preferred option for the owner.

Meanwhile, Dean Holden is said to be very keen on the Rotherham job. What seems to set him apart from other candidates, besides his Warne-style approach, is his extensive Championship pedigree.

He was made the favourite with bookies earlier this week, only for Bonner to replace him not long after.

Holden recently left Stoke City, where he acted as Michael O’Neill’s assistant boss for around 16 months.

The 43-year-old oversaw a 1-0 victory against Blackburn during a brief stint as caretaker boss following O’Neill’s sacking.

Holden’s last permanent managerial role was at Bristol City after stepping up from assistant boss to Lee Johnson.

And before that, he was manager of Oldham from February to May in 2015, in charge of 15 games, won 3, drew 5 and lost 7.

Favourites to become new Rotherham boss

Mark Bonner – 1/5 (was 4/1)
Dean Holden – 5/1 (was 2/1)
Paul Hurst – 16/1 (was 7/2)
Gareth Ainsworth – 18/1 (was 6/1)
Neil Warnock – 20/1 (was 18/1)
Richard Wood – 20/1 (was 16/1)
Rob Edwards – 20/1 (was 8/1)

Fans gave their thoughts as Rotherham consider move for League One boss Mark Bonner as they interview list of candidates

@WRufc01: If we get Bonner (which I hope), hope he brings smith n knibbs to #rufc

@sammyhad1986: if he gets the job my only concern would be the system. He normally plays 4-2-3-1 and the squad we have has been assembled to play 3-5-2

@turnerc66: I’d be happy with that.

@MightyMillers20: Mark Bonner’s Red White Army

@OutSide_TheBox2: Mark Bonner moves into the favourite for the Rotherham role. Would be a shame to see him leave boyhood club Cambridge of course. I dont see it happening just yet anyway. I like the look of Dean Holden at 6/4 . Strikes me as someone up front, passionate and genuine

@BClemitshaw: Bonner v Warne at the weekend. Fate? #rufc

@BaileyVernon02: Mark Bonner’s Red Army 🔴⚪️

@BClemitshaw: Hearing Bonner is coming to The Millers. That will do nicely. #rufc

@X_WXLL1: Yes please #rufc

@stevemilton: If I was Bonner, I’d take it. If it goes wrong, Cambridge will take him back with open arms. He has to take his chance while his stock is high

@samline1982: If Mark Bonner keeps doing what he’s doing here at Cambridge I’m sure more attractive jobs than Rotherham will come his way ⚽️

@boyarms1: Get in 👍

@NeilJHubbard: Would be a sensible next step for him, an obvious candidate really.

@marthagrace174: can we all pretend this isn’t happening

@Rufcjoe87: This has been the name that I’ve seen most #rufc agree on. Not all, but seems only one the majority would be keen on. Let’s see what happens.

@ChesnoidGaming: I can’t take this.

@JamesParrish: Don’t you dare.

@Denton_james: Alexa how do you kidnap a human for

@lillyputpie: Noooooooooooooooooooo

@MarkHanner66: Think he would be a good fit #rufc

@mrpeach1985: Fuck sake. It’s actually going to happen ain’t it!? 😭😭😭

@tommowalkerrr: Well it’s been a long, hard wait but I am now fully ready for an old fashioned head loss

@bradwellcommon: Let’s hope not 🙏

@abs_rufc: Announce Bonner 😍😍😍

@Callum_PUFC: this happens and cambs go too shit 😂😂 and i’m all for it

@TILACUFC: There’s only one rational thing for #CamUTD to do here – sell the stadium and plough all that money into a lifetime contract for Mark Bonner.

@WillDanielsRUFC: A manager getting the best out of his wide players? Yes please. Mark Bonner would be wonderful fit here on so many levels. #rufc

@Jamesr02_: Interesting one if he does, I was always thinking because of how much he loves Cambridge he would never leave unless some serious money was involved
