Robbie Savage signs for non league club nine years after retiring

Robbie Savage has surprised fans across the country after it was announced on Sunday that he has come out of retirement to sign for non-league side Stockport Town in the 10th tier of English football.

The Lions were formed in 2014 and are currently members of the North West Counties League Division One South, sitting 11th with 17 points after 14 games, already 20 points behind the leaders FC Oswestry Town and seven points above the drop.

Manager Adam Jones said: “Sav is well involved with Pro Football Academy (Owners of Stockport Town) and we’ve spoken a couple of times about the prospect of turning out for Stockport Town.

“I am trying to create a blend within the dressing room of young hungry lads and experience, and who can be better placed to guide and support the young lads than Sav.

“So when he said he’d be interested in putting his boots on it was a no brainer for me.”

Robbie Savage said: “It’s not a PR stunt, it’s me trying to help youngsters progress in the game.

“I want to try and give a bit of what I went through in my career with rejection, rehabilitation and the mental side of football.

“I am not going to run games, I will need legs around me. My son had to go out and buy me some boots today – it’s a great opportunity for me.

“What a great opportunity for youngsters to play with a legend like me.”

The Welshman made 623 professional appearances during his career, his last game coming against Reading in May 2011.

He played for Manchester United, Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Brighton & Hove Albion between 1991 and 2008.

He is set to make his debut tomorrow evening when they face FC Oswestry Town in the league.
