Robbie Savage cries during BT’s coverage as his son makes Man Utd debut

Robbie Savage cries during BT’s coverage of the Champions League as his son makes his Man Utd debut against Young Boys on Wednesday.

The former footballer turned pundit and commentator paid an emotional tribute to his Charlie, after the youngster was named on the bench.

New interim boss Ralf Rangnick decided to include a number of United’s most promising young stars for their final group game against the Swiss champs.

One of those was Robbie Savage junior with his Father showing off his bursting pride when talking to those in the studio and viewers at home.

“I’m starting to tear up because Charlie has achieved so much in his young life,” Savage told BT Sport.

“He’s never been top of the class but his application, his work ethic and desire has got him to where he is. My father who’s sadly not with us would be looking down proud of his grandson. Even if he doesn’t get on the pitch, whatever happens for the rest of his life he’s been on the bench for Manchester United.

“He’s done it on his own and all the coaches have played a huge part so I’m absolutely delighted. If he gets on to grace the Theatre of Dreams, his nana at home will be in tears now.

“He’s a great kid and he’ll do everything.

“He’s a great player and has a wonderful left foot. He can run and I think he’s the second fittest at the club. Take it all in because he’s one very lucky boy but a boy who’s worked incredibly hard.”

Savage had hinted earlier in the day that Charlie was inclusion in the Red Devils squad after deleting a tweet that read: “proudest day of my life”.

Charlie signed his first professional contract at the Old Trafford outfit in April after making his way through the Premier League giants’ youth ranks.

Bjorn Hardley, Charlie Wellens, Sam Mather, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire were those to join Savage in a much changed squad.

Working as part of BT Sport’s commentary team for the match, Savage admitted he was a nervous wreck watching on, before saying: “Coming on for Man Utd, Charlie Savage for Juan Mata.

“I never believed I’d ever say those words for Manchester United. What a proud day for my boy after all the hard work.

“What a day for me, his mother, nanna, his grandparents but most importantly for that boy there Charlie Savage.

“So proud of him, it’s just an amazing moment for him – coming on for a World Cup winner.

“I’m a nervous wreck.”
