Rob Elliot’s Gateshead run riot and climb up to 4th with a huge 7-1 thrashing over Kevin Phillips’ Hartlepool United on Tuesday night.
Hartlepool initially took the lead in the 8th minute, with Joe Grey narrowly avoiding missing the chance before scoring with a precise finish.
But despite Callum Whelan having a goal disallowed for Gateshead, they managed to level from the penalty spot in the 28th minute.
Luke Hannant successfully converted the penalty after Dajaune Brown was fouled in the box by Manny Onariase.
In the second half, the home team took the lead early on when Kieron Evans capitalised on a defensive error and beat Pete Jameson.
Brown then scored a header to make it 3-1, followed by Regan Booty driving through a crowded penalty area to score the fourth goal.
Brown completed his brace with a delicate finish, while Whelan replicated a similar goal to make it six with 15 minutes left.
Tom Allan added insult to injury for the visitors by netting a late seventh goal on 90 minutes.

Gateshead interim manager Rob Elliot said, per Sunderland Echo: “It was near perfect and any victory against a top team is a good thing. Obviously the scoreline stands out but when it’s one-all at half-time, it shows if you keep doing the right things, keep knocking on the door, stay patient, not get frustrated, the game does open up and that’s what happened. I’m just so pleased and so proud of the lads.
“The mentality of this team is incredible and it was a big night for them. They (Hartlepool) brought a fantastic following and it could have been one that could have been a bit awkward in terms of the occasion but it just goes to show the group is growing and maturing because this is a young squad. I just have to make sure we reset and go again Friday because we can’t go into Friday on the back of this and not get a result.”
“He’s just a special talent,” explained the Heed boss of striker Dajaune.
“A lot of credit to Luke Clark, who has come in as a scout, because he recommended him, we watched him and I’ll be honest, I was hesitant to bring in a young lad who hadn’t played men’s football. But he scored a header against Fulham Under-21s where it was a near post header when he’s headed the ball, the keeper and the centre-back all at the same time and when I saw that desire, that convinced me. We had to be patient with him since he came in but we are starting to see the benefits of that.”

“First and foremost, I apologise to the fans,” he told BBC Radio Tees Sport, per Hartlepool Mail.
“The players have let them down – we all have as a group.
“I tried to pick a side tonight that I thought would compete and was capable of getting a result.
“After the first five or 10 minutes, it looked like we were going to do that.
“Joe (Grey) gets a goal and then we concede a penalty, which happens.
“We saw out the first half and, even though they dominated possession, we went in and regrouped.
“The manner in which we concede the second goal, we’ve got to do better.
“Still, at 2-1 we feel like we’ve got enough quality in the side to go and get a goal but then the third goes in, and then the fourth, the fifth.
“It just became embarrassing.
“I did not see that coming – I’m shell-shocked if I’m honest.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Gateshead. Some of the football they played was magnificent.
“I don’t want to be too harsh on the players, we have to pick ourselves up because we are in a position where we need two or three wins to secure [National League] safety and that’s got to be our goal.”
This is how fans reacted as Rob Elliot’s Gateshead run riot with a 7-1 thrashing over Kevin Phillips’ Hartlepool…
@WinwoodBailey: We set up to have a back 5 and midfield 3 so deep we had a flat 8. Asking the world of Joe grey once again no support when he’s got the ball and long balls to the smallest lad in the team. No plan B was clear to see in the first half how the game was going … yet no changes
@welterw888: He reckons the players need to show their character on Friday. We’ve seen plenty of their character this season, they are weak as piss and chuck the towel in as soon as they concede.
@DavidOsb94: Never mind feeling embarrassed, they should be ashamed! He was happy to send the players over but didn’t bother himself. He takes full responsibility though
@bripowell91: It’s about time some of these players had someone being “harsh on them”. They should look at themselves and question their commitment to the football club and the fans. That tonight was an embarrassment and they definitely did throw the towel in at 3-1 down. Shameful.
@MarshLukeW: “I can’t be too harsh on them.” We’ve just lost 7-1 to a team that has a running track next to the pitch.
@Hornseydonna3: Still annoyed this morning. The team was set up to defend and just sat back, inviting them to come at us. The only one who deserves any credit is Joe Grey. He worked hard but long balls up to him, with no support, is never going to work. Still undecided about Friday ☹️
@RHUFCR: Can’t be too harsh on them? You having a laugh? This club man 😂
@CamSharpHistory: Where’s Raj? I want a cosy fireside chat telling us everything is okay and it’s everyone else’s fault
@adam_garrington: Okay. How do I get a refund.
@RyanBro11591296: POOLS ARE GOING DOWN AND THE HEED ARE GOING UP THE HEED ARE GOING UP THE HEED ARE GOING UP
@Toonpedro: They looked sharp first 10 minutes and I thought we’re in for a long night. How wrong can you be. We absolutely tore them a new arsehole in the second half. We were magnificent. Well done lads. Marching on.
@Gingerheed: Wow wow wow, that’s been coming for a while, an absolutely stunning performance, not even sure Chesterfield could have handled that tonight, Poolies were just blown away with a total football show tonight, any one of those on the field could have been MOTM, for me it was Brownie
@chrisump37: I LOVE THIS CLUB!!! 🖤🤍💪🏻
@dom_33: That was an unbelievable display 👏👏
@BrianRo37622801: You’re a very good team, peaking at just the right time. Definitely the best of the rest to stop Barnet.
@Barwineewindas: One of the best nights of my football supporting life. Unbelievable night doon the Felling bypass 🎉
@dlh78: Bad night at the office for Suuuuuper Kev! Up the Heed
@MickScully7: Well, I’ve had worse Tuesday nights!
@KennyR1899: Things you love to see
