Riot police deal with Newcastle and Sunderland fans and goalkeeper scores stoppage time goal

Riot police deal with Newcastle and Sunderland fans and goalkeeper Alex Bass scores a stoppage time goal in the under 21s fixture.

Alex Bass, 24, netted a 95th-minute equaliser to secure a point for Sunderland in their derby with the Magpies on Monday evening.

Bass produced a goal like Alisson scored against West Brom in 2021 by joining his teammates in the Newcastle box and finding the back of the net with his head.

However, Bass later revealed that he had handled the ball and that he was surprised the goal stood.

Bass got above his defender to reach Ellis Taylor’s cross first and then played the ball on to the post before scoring in the following phase.

The ball – which bounced off the woodwork – then hit the Sunderland goalkeeper as he fell to the floor and rebounded into the back of the net.

The handful of Sunderland fans inside the stadium were celebrating wildly. However speaking after the game, Bass admitted he actually ‘handballed it’.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Bass said: ‘I have to admit that I handballed it, I didn’t think it was going to be given.’

Four first-team players were named in the strong Sunderland side, with Bass, Niall Huggins, Abdoullah Ba and Jay Matete all starting.

Jewison Bennette also came off the bench, yet it was Newcastle who took the lead thanks to a strike from Joe White in the first half.

The hosts were also reduced to 10 men in the closing stages as Jay Turner-Cooke was sent off, before Bass scored from a corner at the end.

Newcastle United U21s head coach Elliott Dickman was left disappointed as the young Magpies were held to a 1-1 draw, ending in late controversial fashion, against Sunderland in front of 2,500 fans.

Dickman told nufc.co.uk: “We’re very disappointed. It’s never nice to concede late, albeit we haven’t lost the game. We’ve still drawn but because it’s so late, we felt we could have seen the game out but unfortunately we didn’t. It’s a learning curve for the players and us all.

“I’ve had a look back and from my point of view, I think it is a handball. He (Bass) gets a free header, it hits the post, comes back and he bundles the ball over with the use of his arm.

“It might’ve happened too quickly for the referee to see but, looking back on the footage, no matter how slow or in real time it is, I’m not too sure they score if he doesn’t bundle it across with his hand.

“We were good in the first-half, looking dangerous on the break. I think some of the things we worked on exposed their weaknesses and we exploited that to a point. A bit more care in the final third would have helped us, knowing when to pass or shoot and we might have got that a little bit wrong at times tonight.

“The sending off disrupted us and made it really difficult but, because we had the lead, it was sort of let’s see if we can see the game out. It felt like we were going to manage that but we didn’t.”

He added: “We’ve done quite well in the league and I’ve been relatively pleased but there’s still a lot of areas that we want to try and develop. We are very committed to the games and working a lot harder, implementing a lot of things in terms of without the ball.

“With the ball, we’ve shown glimpses of good play at times and we want more of that. That is something we’ll be working on between now and moving into the second-half of the season.

“Leeds is our last league game of the calendar year and we have a Premier League Cup competition that we’re in so it’ll be a good opportunity to reinforce those habits and behaviours we want.”

There was a relatively big police presence at the game, though it looks as though it was under control for large parts with no serious incidents reported. It’s unknown if there were any arrests either.
