Ugly scenes after Huddersfield and Millwall fans clash as police make arrests

There were ugly scenes on Saturday after Huddersfield and Millwall fans took to clash with each other as police make arrests.

West Yorkshire Police were spotted arresting several people following the Championship fixture which saw the Terriers win 1-0.

A tense atmosphere built outside the John Smith’s Stadium with several people whisked away by officers, with fans goading each other as police try to calm the situation.

According to Examiner Live, police were seen running up Leeds Road into Huddersfield town centre and confronted a number fans who were facing up to the officers with their batons out.

The two groups of supporters were ushered away from each other with the Millwall set going into the station.

Town fans were leaving St George’s Square and the other fans had to be dispersed by police.

The game itself saw Huddersfield move off the foot of the Championship table with a dominant display in a 1-0 win over Millwall.

The away side, who had won four on the trot heading into the game, suffered an early setback and failed to recover.

Yuta Nakayama broke the deadlock, scoring a freakish goal inside nine minutes with a miscued cross handing his side the lead.

The struggling Terriers tightened their grip and nearly got a second when Sorba Thomas struck the post.

But their inability to double the advantage was left unpunished as Mark Fotheringham oversaw his second victory as Huddersfield’s new boss.

Huddersfield’s Mark Fotheringham: “I’m really satisfied with the group and their endeavour and work ethic today – it’s given us a good platform to build on. They’re really starting to grow as a group and we just need to bring a calmness to everything and not get too disappointed if we lose.

“All we want to do this season is stay in the league because we know the club’s in a transitional period. The players have never lost confidence at any time and they’re really focused on their training and it’s coming to fruition. I want fit and aggressive players and from front to back we looked solid. We’re making ourselves a hard team to play against now; we’re looking very strong.”

Millwall’s Gary Rowett: “They’re fighting for their lives and we knew it’d be a tough game if we didn’t do the right things. We’ve had four wins on the bounce and, as a manager, you always have that concern in the back of your mind about these types of games.

“You have to hand Huddersfield credit; I thought they worked incredibly hard and they looked like a team absolutely desperate to get that win. Second half, we were better, but again we didn’t put good balls into good areas, and we went too direct in the last 10 minutes.”

Social media users reacted to the ugly scenes after Huddersfield and Millwall fans clash with each other as police make a number of arrests…

@NatSufc99: Millwall don’t travel in great numbers by and large but the proportion of their fans that are up for it is really something to behold.

will.adds_: This generation can’t get a break, when they do something they’re made fun of and when they do nothing they get bullied for just standing there. At least make it consistent, respect for these lads for having a pop at each other
