In the FA Cup Final earlier this year, Manchester United had Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to thank for producing a 2-1 win against rivals Manchester City.

Garnacho pounced on a mistake by City to put United ahead on 30 minutes, before Mainoo calmly doubled their lead, as the Red Devils stunned Pep Guardiola’s domestic double hopefuls in the first half.

City tried fighting back, hitting the cross bar through Erling Haaland, before substitute Jeremy Doku set-up a tense finish with a low shot into the bottom corner in the 87th minute.

However, United held on to win the 13th FA Cup in their history, moving to within one of Arsenal’s record, and book their place in next season’s Europa League. And also eased pressure on Erik ten Hag’s future after speculation he was set to be sacked.

Penalties were needed to settle the 23/24 FA Trophy Final, just hours after a comfortable win in the FA Vase final.

In the FA Vase at Wembley, with a lunchtime kick off, Romford beat rivals Great Wakering Rovers 3-0 to lift the trophy, marking one of the greatest moments in the club’s 148-year history.

The 9th tier club netted twice in two second-half minutes to stun their fellow Essex Senior League side with Hassan Nalbant’s first of two goals breaking the deadlock, and then Sam Deering doubled the lead on the 54th minute.

Nalbant scored his 32nd goal of the season with the outside of his foot after being put through as the game came to an end.

This was Romford’s first win in a national cup competition for 75 years after they lost the FA Amateur Cup final in their last appearance at Wembley.

Meanwhile in the FA Trophy Final, penalties were needed, after Gateshead and Solihull played out a 2-2 draw after extra time.

On the verge of half time, Regan Booty gave Gateshead the lead, with Beck making it 1-1 in the 69th minute.

The referee gave a penalty to Solihull early on in extra time, with a yellow card issued to Louis Storey after bringing down Beck inside the area. Beck stepped up and put Solihull ahead.

Gateshead got an equaliser in the second half of extra time with a volley from Brown on the 111th minute. This is how the penalty shootout played out…

Warburton scores – 1-0 Solihull
Booty’s penalty saved
Shade puts his penalty over the crossbar
Dinanga converts his penalty – 1-1
Clarke’s penalty is saved
Francis’ penalty is saved
Beck scores – 2-1 Solihull
Olley scores – 2-2
Newton scores – 3-2 Solihull
Storey scores – 3-3
Mafuta scores – 4-3 Solihull
Evans scores – 4-4
Labadie puts it over the bar
Allan’s penalty is saved
Whitmore hits the crossbar and misses
Brown – 5-4 Gateshead, FA Trophy winners
