‘Relegate us’, ‘Shambles’ are just some of the words used by Southampton fans after they were left reeling as news emerges this week.
Saints supporters aren’t happy with the update on their plans to replace Danny Ings, who recently departed from the club in favour of a shock move to Aston Villa.
Ings managed to make a total of 100 appearances for his now former club, and certainly made a positive impact, as he netted 46 goals whilst also chipping in with ten assists for his team-mates.

It was first reported by HampshireLive that Southampton obtained a fee in the region of £30million for Ings this summer, with Villa going on to use some of the money they earned from Jack Grealish’s exit.
Adam Armstong was the man reportedly among their targets to replace Ings, but it would seem that asthe highly rated Blackburn Rovers forward is now set to sign for Crystal Palace, with Sky Sports claiming that talks are at an advanced stage.
HampshireLive have then revealed that Southampton will ‘address cheaper alternatives’ in their efforts to replace Danny Ings this summer.
That’s before there being an potential chance of making another offer for Armstrong if he is still available.
The former Newcastle United forward found the net on 29 occasions within 43 appearances for Blackburn Rovers last term, as they finished 15th in the Championship table.
HampshireLive took a look at the strikers who could realistically come in to replace Ings, mentioning Tammy Abraham, Noni Madueke, Matthew Hoppe, Eddie Nketiah, Adam Armstrong, Odsonne Edouard and Josh Sargent.
Danny Ings insists the chance to join Villa was “a challenge I couldn’t really shy away from” after completing his £30million move.
“To be honest, I’ve been at a lot of places in my career, but this was definitely the best-kept secret really,” Ings told VillaTV.
“It’s been a crazy couple of days, not being able to tell my family up until it was announced. Now I’m just happy to be here and get started.
“I think the club itself is a huge club, as everybody knows. You can see the direction the owner and everybody wants to take with this club.
“It’s a huge club with a huge reputation and huge expectation from the fans. It was a challenge I couldn’t really shy away from and a challenge I’m looking forward to.”
Ings added: “I think it’s just the direction of the club and where the gaffer and everybody wants to take the club really.
“It is a tough challenge. A club like this should be competing for Europe, with its history. Hopefully I can play my part in achieving that. There is definitely a lot of good times to look forward to for this football club.”
“Everywhere that I’ve been in my career, one of the biggest things for me is to get that bond with the fans as quick as possible,” said the striker.
“I’ve managed to do that at every other club that I’ve been at and this is no different.”
As mentioned, Southampton fans were left reeling as news emerges on potential replacements for Ings, see what they said…
@StuartWoods1986: Just relegate us now
@kierangallop00: And I’m supposed to believe the club is in a good place? Before the ‘we’ve got no money’ argument comes in, we’ve just got 28 million from Ings and will likely get a decent enough fee for Vestergaard. Utter shambles
@SfcBxnnn: We are acc so dusted man, relegation is imminent
@melxadamson: i hate everything about this 🚶🏻♀️ we are literally running head first into the relegation zone at this point
@jlavooo: This club is an absolute joke. Buying cheap in the hope they come off is absolute relegation fodder
@HackedOffStuart: This is us all over, selling big and buying cheap.. isn’t this model why we are where we are?
@Too_Jazzee: Knew it. Won’t spend half the money we got for Ings I guarantee it. If we buy someone it’ll be some unproven 20yo who is ‘one for the future’ yet can’t help us with this season
@James90044529: This tweet symbolises everything about what’s wrong with Saints at the moment
@Josh_b222: This is why we’re going down – no ambition what so ever
@melxadamson: I hate everything about this. We are literally running head first into the relegation zone at this point
@sfcdan_: Ross McCormack, here we go!
@Danlowthphotog1: I’m not the most optimistic person at the best of times when it comes to saints, but this year I feel our transfer policies will finally bite us in the ass, Gao would be better selling up now as we will be worth half of what we are now as a championship club.
@Dekerz_03: Fucking hell 😂 we got 10 days or something before the season starts, they better hurry up
@sfctom_: literally just buy tammy ffs
@GeoEfs: Meanwhile Armstrong signs elsewhere and we’re left without a striker that can score double figures.
@SaintLiam02: We’ve just gotten a shit ton of money for Ings and we wanna opt for the cheaper side again fuck sake things will never change
@Dixon1970Darren: Our owner is clearly totally skint, or isn’t interested. I’d be happy for Katherina to make a killing and buy back control from him. She had her faults, but it felt like she was safer hands
@G0DDARD97: Well he’s gone to palace or Norwich then fml saints your piss arsing Around again!!!
@MikeElkins86: Cheaper alternatives. Don’t want to pay over the odds is a smart option but time is disappearing to add to a squad devoid of any depth. Tough season ahead I think
