Norwich fans slam ref for denying ‘stonewall penalty’; Wigan fans mock horror injury

A referee has been slammed for denying Norwich a ‘stonewall penalty’ while Wigan fans’ chant is also condemned after a horror injury.

Norwich fans were critical of the chants coming from the away end after Dimitris Giannoulis’s horror injury, seeing him needing gas and air.

The 26 year old Canaries player was unfortunately stretchered off as the Wigan boss Leam Richardson seen screaming at the referee to stop play.

Medics rushed to his side in Saturday’s Championship clash with around 35 minutes left and the score 1-0 at Carrow Road – James McClean finishing calmly against the run of play after Ben Gibson’s lapse in concentration at the back.

And the defender was left in tears as he was stretchered off the field with his ankle heavily bandaged. Fans and players looking on with worry as Giannoulis was replaced by Sam McCallum.

After that Teemu Pukki drove the hosts forward and dropped the ball off to Milot Rashica, who moved it on for the onrushing Max Aarons to fire through Ben Amos and into the back of the net!

The 71st minute saw Onel Hernandez feel the hand of Tendayi Darikwa on his shoulder and went down immediately, but referee Matthew Donohue wasn’t having any of it!

A nearly moment for Norwich as Todd Cantwell’s floated free-kick was missed by goalkeeper Ben Amos and just about managed to trickle clear.

Teemu Pukki tried a neat flick after connecting with Onel Hernandez’ ball in from the left, but Amos was equal to it.

A huge late chance for Teemu Pukki, who received a neat ball from Todd Cantwell, turned and fired a shot onto the bar via a fingertip save from Ben Amos!

With the clock running down, it was penalty shout after penalty shout in the box. Aarons was on the end of a rough challenge from Naylor, who went in hard but took the ball. Then Cantwell went down and the Norwich fans scream again. But the referee turned away calls.

Norwich came again and the ball fell to Cantwell on the edge. His shot was deflected over, and then they couldn’t make anything from the corner.

Norwich boss Dean Smith felt his side’s performance warranted a victory, but was left frustrated at the decision, which he felt should have resulted in both a spot kick being awarded and a red card.

“My reflections on the game are that they’ve nicked a point and we’ve lost two. I thought that it was a step in the right direction in terms of performance.

“Even if we would have won three or four nil, I still would have been saying that it was a step in the right direction.

“The only thing that was missing today was the three points, and we probably should have got that but for a ludicrous decision not to give a penalty from a horrendous tackle,” City’s boss said.

“It was a scandalous decision and a scandalous tackle that should have resulted in a penalty and a red card.

“Max is okay but he’s got a gaping wound in his left shin, which tells you everything.”

Smith dismissed counter arguments claiming that Naylor got to the ball first – something that is rendered irrelevant in the laws of the game.

Serious foul play was deemed to be ‘a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality’.

“It certainly wasn’t an excuse when I played,” Smith said. “If you went over the top even when you won the ball, you were off.

“I haven’t seen any other of the others back, but that was the one my analyst was keen to show me after the game.

“I saw Nigel Pearson’s comments after a penalty that was given against them at Hull saying ‘can we have VAR in the Championship? If not, why not?’

“Why aren’t referees mic’d up so we can get a breakdown of why they are making the decisions that they make. He is looking straight down the barrel of that one, and it worries me if he doesn’t see that as a bad tackle.”

Dean Smith also provided an update on Dimi Giannoulis: “He got his studs caught in the ground and went over on his ankle.

“He was distressed and obviously in a lot of pain. I’ve just seen him in the medical room and he’s in the best place at the moment.

“We hope it isn’t too serious. He will go to hospital and have an x-ray or a scan and see how it is. We will know how it is then.”

THE GOALS:

As mentioned, Norwich fans took to slam Wigan fans’ chant after Giannoulis’s horror injury, see what was said below…

@DJM_IRL: Get well soon 🔰

@hongdongjji: sending best from USA – Dimi, come back soon 👍

@smhal09: Wigan fans allegedly chanting “soft southern bastard” as Giannoulis is given oxygen and taken off on a stretcher. Max Aarons promptly scores for Norwich at the restart and tells them to f**k off. Good lad. #NCFC

@SCFack: Classy from Wigan fans chanting “soft southern bastard” while Giannoulis is on a stretcher being given oxygen….

@RichSmiiSmith: Thats a vile sounding injury. Giannoulis was in serious pain #NORWIG

@AdamBrandon84: Giannoulis looks and sounds in a lot of pain there.

@Paulthehammer79: Stonewall penalty

@DGray1990: Red all day

@Dxnwxlls: Ouch. 100% a pen

@simonbby: Won the ball but took the man superb challenge but in the rules and with var would probably have been a penalty lucky boy

@MicWafc123: Gets the ball and Aaron’s leg swings through into the boot of Naylor, ref bang on

@baltimorecanary: “swings his standing leg into Naylor’s boot” 🤣🤣🤣 I’ll have whenever you’re having mate

@Bradders4711: Red card and a penalty, dangerous

@jackson9np: Played the ball, crisp and clean….

@ChopperBlue74: With the daft modern day rules it’s a penalty. To anybody with eyes and common sense however he clearly gets the ball first and accidentally gets Aarons

@Moseley3_: Quality tackle. Not a pen.

@DaleyDCFC: Won the ball so no penalty

@benclay2022: Yeh! Won the ball ffs!!!

@_JackAvfc: Got the ball and Aaron’s kicked him?

@sjhawk90: Nice to see the standard of referring is still abysmal

@12QOTSA: Absolutely no penalty, an excellently timed tackle

@craigoates87: Penalty all day long

@CFC_Mason2001: Not a penalty. Got the ball, cleared it, only hit Aaron’s because he strung his leg forward to shoot

@stevedarney: Won the ball – in normal play you don’t give those … period … get VAR involved – could be called as dangerous play as left the ground (just) and smashed into his shin …
