Reason behind Benjamin Mendy’s meltdown in prison revealed

The reason behind Benjamin Mendy’s meltdown in prison has been revealed with some revealing details reported on Tuesday night.

The Premier League player has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, and his time in custody has been extended.

Mendy is said to be furious on arrival at his jail cell after mistakenly believing he was going to be housed on a VIP wing.

He is currently on remand in HMP Altcourse following his appearance in Chester Magistrates’ court on Friday, but the 27-year-old was also shocked that he would not be allowed home as he was instead transported to the Category B jail in Liverpool.

Mendy misheard and assumed that meant he would be taken to a wing specifically for those in the public eye and celebrity figures, dismayed when he realised that was not the case.

Mendy is charged with three counts of rape in October 2020 and with the sexual assault of a woman in early January this year, and is also charged with raping a woman earlier this month.

In a statement, Mendy’s club said: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today (Thursday), Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Man City played Mendy for NINE months following his initial arrest in November and were fully aware of his police investigation and even tried to give him another chance to reignite his stay at the Etihad.

A charge of breaking bail conditions appeared on the court list but was withdrawn in court. It had been alleged he breached conditions in August, after being released on July 26.

Fourteen reporters were in court for the hearing, which was delayed for the arrival of a French interpreter.

Mendy spoke to give his name, age and address and was represented by barrister Christopher Stables.

District Judge Jack McGarva sent the case to Chester Crown Court where the Frenchman is due to appear on the 10th of September.

Mendy showed no emotion as he was taken from the court accompanied by two dock officers at the end of the hearing, which lasted around an hour.

It would seem that things then turned sour for the player after turning up at prison, with a source saying: “When Mendy arrived staff explained he was going to be kept on the VP wing for his own safety.

“But perhaps because he is French and his English isn’t great, he misunderstood what they had said and thought he was being taken to a VIP wing for celebrities.

“He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realised who he was going to be mixing with.

“He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.”
