Reading face a potential points deduction as two new managerial contenders emerge now that talks with Chris Wilder has collapsed.
The Royals did not pay their players in full and on time in October, November, and April – a violation of EFL regulations.
The club has failed to pay the wages of their loaned players, and this is likely to lead to another transfer embargo.
Wigan Athletic was charged with a similar violation, given a four point deduction.
The employees were told to deposit 125 percent of their expected salary into a holding bank in case there were any more late payments, leading to them being deducted four points if they did not do this.
Dai Yongge has been charged as well with causing the club to be in violation of EFL Regulations despite the fact that he committed to funding the cash requirements of Club.
The Club and Mr Dai will have until Thursday, 29th June 2023 at 4pm to respond to these charges.
@GeorgeFlood24, a senior digital sport editor Evening Standard: “Sickening. Yet MORE huge trouble for #readingfc, who will surely now be subject to further points deductions on top of having no manager and only a handful of players. Club has been in complete crisis for a while now under this hapless regime and it’s just getting worse and worse.”
Journalist Marc Mayo also said: “Another big test for EFL now it’s finally pinning personal blame on #ReadingFC owner Dai Yongge Will it just keep slowly bleeding the club of points and opportunity until it dies, in the hope he goes, or actually do something serious to remove him and give someone else a chance?”

EFL STATEMENT:
Reading Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations.
The charges relate to the Club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full on or around 31 October 2022, 30 November 2022 and 28 April 2023.
Yongge Dai, the Club’s owner, has also been charged with causing the Club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the Club.
The Club and Mr Dai have until 4pm on Thursday 29 June 2023 to respond to the charges.
Meanwhile, according to @DarrenOWitcoop: “The news has broken now but Reading’s bid to make Chris Wilder their new manager does appear to have collapsed. Danny Cowley and Steve Cotterill likely to come back under consideration #readingfc”
It was soon reported by Football Insider that after talks advanced, the deal was delayed as the recently relegated club had ongoing issues within the hierarchy.
It has now been confirmed that talks between the 55-year-old and Reading have collapsed meaning their search for a new manager continues, with no need additions to the squad and players leaving with the season’s fixtures released in under a week and pre-season beginning in July.
This is what fans are saying as Reading face a potential points deduction as two new managerial contenders emerge…
@rogerthedodge2: Shock – EFL fining clubs & punishing fans yet they continue letting unscrupulous owners buy clubs – maybe the EFL want to take a long hard look at themselves & see if they are fit for purpose 🤷🏼♂️ good luck to Reading & Wigan hope u sort this mess out
@Blues1871: Please explain to us Reading fans why you approved Dai after he’d been turned down as not fit and proper by the Premier League?
@dingjohnny1871: This is the EFLs fault for even thinking for a second that Dai Younge can own a football club, disgraceful.
@Fozzwafc: They’ll be joining us on -8 soon 😖 hope you can get out of this mess soon
@mickyh01: Another points deduction incoming 😂
@fenners100: Well you were the ones who deemed him fit and proper…… 🤔
@Rik_JP1884: Having been there, feel for the Reading fans. EFL need to do more to ensure that owners are fit and proper, not pay lip service. Hope they get sorted out.
@BradSRay: Ffs 🤦🏻♂️
@Filbyyy: Get them out
@officialyspeedo: Points off?? 1 rule for 1… 1 rule for another 🤷♂️
@lee_perrett: I take it you’re bored of Wigan now, you’ve got come back to us EFL you’re a joke
@LestahSam: Charge the owner, not the club. Also your fault you let these crooks own clubs in the first place
@pembertongaffr: We all know what comes next . Tax bill haven’t been paid #readingfc
@ElmRoyal: This is your fault @EFL.. How can you allow someone who has taken 2 clubs into liquidation to take over @ReadingFC Blood on your hands!!!!
@tylerrzrl4: Get that clown out of my club
@faz42: Reading fans we feel your pain at wigan. Hope you get through this and these owners get binned.
@James_A_Day: A reminder this is a guy you deemed to be fit and proper. Maybe take some responsibility for your own ineptitude.
@BiscuitAnalytic: Failure to pay 3 times in one season. Three times! Sure it was just those pesky international banking rules though hey Dai? #DaiOut #ReadingFC
@SamuelKailus: I’m sure Dai’s issue isn’t being skint. So imagine having the money and creating all of this mess, it’s time to go. Clearly has no respect for the club or the fans. #readingfc
@m1871e: Dai out needs to be plastered everywhere. Top class idiot. Clueless moron #readingfc
@MattyHC5: This cycle seems to just repeat itself and isn’t showing any signs of stopping any time soon. These chancers who buy football clubs somehow manage to pass these “fit and proper tests” and end up running clubs into the ground. The EFL isn’t even fit and proper. #ReadingFC #EFL
@mattecho2000: Clubs falling apart. Failed to get Wilder, Bowen and the owners have fallen out, now another possible point deduction before the season has even started. Shambles. #readingfc
@DavidJa16956153: Oh wow. They’re in for a rough ride. Hope they can find a way out of this as quickly as we did #wafc #readingfc
@m2120b: Fit and Proper Test is clearly working… #readingfc
@RyanWatkins20: Always said I’d give the owner the benefit of the doubt until he stopped fronting proper cash but this is unforgivable and HAS to spell the end of Dai’s tenure. The club is falling apart in front of us at a ridiculously pace.
@AndrewRacklyeft: The way it’s going here could we see back to back relegations for two championship clubs? Seems almost unprecedented but we were deducted 9 points for pretty much exactly this…
@MHayden_24: Fuck sake didn’t even make it till midday without some sort of bad news. Enough is enough. These incompetent fucks have got to go. Dai has already let 2 clubs die, if something doesn’t change soon I am in no doubt that we will be the third. #readingfc #DaiOut
@JamesEast16: Fuck the EFL for allowing him to by the club and Fuck Dai for slowly killing us off. He’s done it twice before and we will be his 3rd club to suffer the same fate if things don’t change. Get this criminal out!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬
@CScott___: Banter club. Just liquidate us.
