Huge blow for Reading hit with EFL punishment and talks with Chris Wilder ‘collapses’

There is a huge blow for Reading who have been hit with a fresh EFL punishment and talks with manager Chris Wilder reportedly ‘collapses’.

Football Insider has learned that Reading’s attempt to appoint Chris Wilder as manager has failed after the former Sheffield United manager and Middlesbrough coach was in advanced discussions to take over Royals.

Both parties have decided to terminate negotiations after the initial delay.

After talks with Wilder failed, Reading will now continue their search for a new manager ahead of the League One 2023/24 campaign with the likes of Danny Cowley and Steve Cotterill are now likely to come back into consideration.

Since Paul Ince was sacked in April, the Royals have been without an official manager. Noel Hunt has taken over as interim manager until the end the season.

To make things worse, Reading have now had ‘Non-Payment of Loan Wages’ added onto on their embargo list.

EFL STATEMENT:

Reading Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations.

The charges relate to the Club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full on or around 31 October 2022, 30 November 2022 and 28 April 2023.

Yongge Dai, the Club’s owner, has also been charged with causing the Club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the Club.

The Club and Mr Dai have until 4pm on Thursday 29 June 2023 to respond to the charges.

CLUB STATEMENT EARLIER TODAY:

From the CEO: “I would personally like to thank all our supporters for their patience last season and throughout the summer so far.

“Mr Dai personally attended both home and away matches on many occasions last season and, as a supporter of this football club himself, he was very disappointed to see the campaign end in relegation. It is not what we planned, it is not what we hoped for, it is not what we expected.

“Following the six points taken from our total, our season quickly became another very difficult one for the players, the staff and most importantly our fans. And that is why this update has to begin with a note of sincere gratitude to our loyal supporters!

“The process to appoint a new manager has been underway for some time now, but we fully recognise how important a decision this is for the club – for next season and beyond. And for that reason, the process has been comprehensive and has naturally taken time. Mr Dai himself has played and continues to play an active part in the search and appointment of the next manager…a process we fully believe is now rightly reaching its conclusion.

“When we said we would fix the issues of the past and build this club back to a level at which we all want to see it compete, we knew it was going to be a long-term project. We hoped to avoid serious setbacks like last season, but despite the very best efforts of so many, this was not possible.

“As a club, financially we continue to face a number of significant challenges and our owner, Mr Dai, is working very hard to resolve those issues to ensure the future of Reading Football Club is stable, successful, progressive and positive.

“Our short-term goal is now clear though…to appoint the right man for the role of first team manager and to rebuild a squad capable of competing for a return to the Championship!

“Long term, I am confident we have the right people at the club to achieve our ambitions and fully correct the mistakes that were made many years ago.

“But, as always, we will need our fans. Thank you for your support, your faith in us and your love for your club.

Here’s what fans have said on the huge blow for Reading who have been hit with an EFL punishment and talks with Chris Wilder ‘collapses’…

@James2101815954: The level of incompetence at this club is staggering

@dingbiggsmum: Refund for season tickets? What is happening to my club #readingfc #sadtimes

@Tatum1871: We have not had a single piece of good news around the club since we got our second points deduction last season. SURELY at some point we’ll get some good news #ReadingFC

@BigBadWolfRFC: I advise everyone to delete this app, forget about #ReadingFC, go outside and enjoy the sunshine. We’re torturing ourselves! And what for? The club is rotten.

@Tatum1871: I’m loss for words. #ReadingFC

@Callumc1871: Fck me every time I go on this app I’m met with a new chapter to this disastrous saga. #readingfc

@SarryHands: Don’t think this is gonna be very popular but in regards to Wilder, he was a very audacious appointment for us. Obviously the club have messed it up which is frustrating but there are plenty of other good options we may appoint. Wouldn’t lose faith in that regard yet #readingfc

@PaulFrankfurt71: So no Wilder and a new embargo. May well be linked. Fun times. #readingfc

@DeanBennett1993: Honestly hope this isn’t true 😕 #readingfc

@DanTheMan__98: Let’s face it, we’re not at all surprised that it hasn’t ended up being wilder, for as long as Dai is at the club the decision making at this football club will be fucking dreadful. et’s face it he has 100% gone with whoever his buddy Kia recommends instead of letting Mark Bowen just get on with it, and now the only manager that would have given us hope is not gonna in the dugout next season, its one shitshow after another at this football club. And they wonder why people haven’t renewed, there is absolutely zero to be positive about ahead of the season. Its an absolute fucking shambles the lot of it and the club is still rotten to the core.

@Alex_Shep_Urzz: Unbelievable. Honestly the timing of every event this week has been quite incredible. One thing comes out, just when something is addressed something else comes out instantly. This one probably the worst, Wilder was what was giving us some positivity. #ReadingFC

@Dubstep1988: How is it possible for one club to be this staggeringly incompetent? #readingfc

@Callum_OUFC: Chris Wilder’s a yellow he hates Reading 🎶😂😂
