Rashford and Martial Similar records after reaching major Man Utd milestone

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial both made their 250 appearances for the Red Devils in Tuesday’s FA Cup victory over Premier League side West Ham.

Unfortunately, neither of the attacking duos celebrated the milestone with a goal, as youngster Scott McTominay netted the only goal to set up a quarter-final meeting with in-form Leicester City.

But the attacking duo have certainly contributed their bit for Manchester United frontline over the last six years – and the two forwards have similar records many don’t know about.

France international forward Anthony Martial has netted 78 goals and created 49 assists for the Red Devils, while England international forward Marcus Rashford has found the net 83 times and created 51 assists.

The two players are of similar age – with the Frenchman just two years older than the Englishman at 25 – and both were handed first-team opportunities at Old Trafford under the tutelage of Dutchman Louis van Gaal during the 2015-2016 league season.

Frenchman Martial was bought as a 19-year-old for a transfer fee of £54million from French Ligue 1 side Monaco back in the summer of 2015, while Englishman Rashford was an academy graduate and made his breakthrough later that year.

The two forwards made brilliant goalscoring debuts – with Anthony Martial scoring in a 3-1 League victory over Liverpool, just 11 days after signing for the club.

The irony of the whole situation is that an injury to Anthony Martial led to Marcus Rashford getting his major Manchester United break, with Rashford scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Danish side Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League in 2016.

The brace made Rashford United’s youngest goalscorer ever in a European tournament – a record Mason Greenwood has since broken.

And Marcus Rashford made the best of his first-team call up with a brilliant Premier League debut three days later, netting twice and creating the other in a 3-2 win over North London club Arsenal.

Since that first season together, the duo have played under managers at Old Trafford and have both contributed 16 goals in 155 football games together.

The last time the duo played together, Martial scored in the 2-0 victory over Merseyside club Everton in the league cup quarter-final in December.

Other popular link-ups between the two players include Rashford’s scintillating back-heel to set up the Frenchman against Norwich City last campaign, and the England forward’s incredible screamer against London club West Ham which helped the Red Devils towards a 12th Emirates FA Cup success in 2016.

The club who must fear the combination of the duo is Sheffield United, with the two strikers having combined to record three goals against Sheffield – more than against any other club.

Meanwhile, the French forward’s favorite club to score against is Merseyside giant Everton, with Martial having scored six goals in 10 matches against Everton.

For the Englishman, it’s Chelsea and Leicester City, who have each conceded 5 goals against Rashford. It will interest you to know that Marcus Rashford has never suffered defeat against Leicester City, while his goals versus West London club Chelsea include his Ronaldo-Esque free-kick at the Bridge in the League Cup in 2019.

On a final note, looking at the past six season’s shows that Marcus Rashford has become progressively more vital for Manchester United each campaign.

Both footballers will be hoping to add to their goal tally when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team travel to face West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
