Premier League clubs set to refund £177million to season-ticket holders and corporate clients with the 2019/20 season set to finish behind closed doors.
Analysis from Sportsmail reveals that the clubs were projecting a match-day income of around £708m this season, but almost a quarter of that set to be lost due to the coronavirus shutdown.
Plans are in place to restart the season later this summer but played behind closed doors, leaving clubs liable to offer refunds to fans and corporate clients who are unable to attend.
Top flight sides stand to lose £1.137billion overall with a big chunk of that figure from the £762m league bosses who claimed it would be due in rebates to broadcast rights holders if the season is voided, which has yet to be resolved.
Sky Sports indicate they will not seek a refund on the £371m worth of matches that have so far been postponed even if the season is cancelled.
But it’s the refunding supporters that is a massive concern to clubs with the majority losing out as a result of suspending next season’s season ticket and corporate sales.
17 of the 20 Premier League clubs have suspended the season ticket renewal process — Newcastle, Everton and Norwich are the exceptions, although they will offer payment holidays if requested.
