Police called in after Chelsea fan runs onto pitch to confront Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka

Police have been called in after a Chelsea fan runs onto pitch to confront Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka on Tuesday night.

An investigation has been launched with Met Police and Chelsea looking into the incident which saw a fan enter the pitch and taunt Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

It came prior to Chelsea winning 4-2 penalty shootout victory to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals with the draw for that taking place on Wednesday.

The supporter made his way past stewards from the Matthew Harding stand and barged into Dubravka seconds after Mykhailo Mudryk scored an injury-time equaliser to send the tie to spot kicks.

Mauricio Pochettino condemned the incident with Eddie Howe, who also got assaulted by a supporter at Leeds last season, said: ‘I have always said that the safety of players, coaches, managers, referees, linesmen that’s the priority in any football match so more has to be done to keep especially irate supporters away from the pitch.’

Pochettino said: ‘We need to be careful. The fans need to be careful with this type of thing because it’s a thing that can put in danger the players. I’m disappointed. I don’t agree with this type of thing that happened here in Stamford Bridge and in other stadiums in England or around the world. It’s always disappointing with this type of thing because it’s dangerous.’

Eddie Howe sent support to Trippier, after gifiting Mudryk his goal when he misjudged Malo Gusto’s cross with Trippier then sending his spot-kick wide before back-up goal-keeper Djordje Petrovic saved the decisive effort from Matt Ritchie to put Chelsea through to the semi finals.

Trippier has received criticism for his contribution to two costly errors against Everton and was also tormented on his recent return to Tottenham.

Howe said on Trippier: ‘Tripps is an incredibly strong character. A transformative signing that’s taken the group to a totally different level. Been the heartbeat of that. He has given us so much now is our turn to look after him an support him the other way and that’s what we will do.’

He went on: ‘I don’t feel pressure because they need to score and I can be the hero. I just did my job.’

Pochettino added: ‘The most important thing in football was to believe to the end and it was possible [to win] because we kept believing. Our objective before the game was to go through to the semi-final and we are there.

‘These type of games are important [for the group].

‘I am so pleased because when you see the whole squad were involved, even those injured wanted to share the happiness afterwards. We look like a healthy squad and in time we will create a team which can compete for trophies.’

This is what Twitter users had to say with police called in after a Chelsea fan runs onto pitch to confront Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka…

@SteveDo54628751: Dubravka handled it well but hopefully the little runt gets a lifetime ban. Love to have seen how old John Burridge would have dealt with it 🤣

@alexparsons75: Hope that fan coming on the pitch and assaulting Dubravka doesn’t get sweep under the carpet @nufc @FAspokesperson

@Tdheynnnnies: Fan on the pitch, runs by the steward who doesn’t chase him gets to Dubravka then runs back by the same steward who still doesn’t grab him but lets him back into the crowd. What’s all that about?

@_Jenky88: First thing I noticed upon seeing it – a half arsed attempt to stop him from entering onto the pitch – then doesn’t follow him, let’s him get in Dubravka’s face before politely ushering him back into the stand. Clown.

@neilemm44: BTW Nobody’s mentioned the effect on Dubravka after the doylem of a Chelsea fan ran into him 🤷🏼‍♂️ dirty fckn twat should be banned

@geordiecat2012: Glad the Chelsea fan who actually made contact with Dubravka didn’t have a knife…could have been very different and the steward was really slow to respond. Hope the fan gets banned. #NUFC

@EastStandMag: Not only does he help him back to his seat, but he lets him approach the player. Some serious re-training needed for the steward.

@BestfordDavid: Steward should be sacked and the lad who jumped on the pitch should be banned for life. #premierleague #carabaocup

@GeordieRadge: Bit of a half-hearted attempt to stop the pitch-invading knacka in the first place. Utterly useless steward. #sacked

@kevba1971: @metpoliceuk what action has been taken to identify this person who committed a number of offences including assault??

@shields_dave: What are the police and Chelsea going to do about fan, who confronted Dubravka. Could have had a knife or anything, steward did nothing but help him back into stand. Should have been led away and arrested, disgusting. Either train stewards, Or bring police in for games.

@JamesFoth: Sums that fanbase up. Sat on their hands for 95 minutes then just wanted to wave at the away end and pretend to fight

@ConwayAdrian: Security is finished. The lads are literally the last off the boat and paid pittance. This is the same at gigs, pubs or events. No security.

@Fletchmyster85: No fan should enter the field of play BUT I watched the game & several times Dubravka went over & goaded the same @ChelseaFC fans each time he let the ball run out or made a save. This was a consequence of his actions too! Both should be punished!

@CJoneses100: Until a player gets seriously hurt, security measures in the #PremierLeague won’t be reviewed 🤦🏼 Not sure why things have to turn fatal b4 humans react, but this is out of order. Fans are too close to the pitch; they should not be allowed to come in contact w/players so easily 🙄

@biteyourlegs: What a 🔔🔚

@RSJ1975: Fucking joke this. Steward shouldn’t be anywhere near a ground again
