Plymouth speak out on pitch invader who goaded Cheltenham player

Plymouth Argyle speak out on the pitch invader who bizarrely goaded a Cheltenham Town player mid-game on Saturday afternoon.

A supporter ran onto the pitch, but a steward or security member wasn’t to be seen, with the culprit having plenty of time to interact with a member of the away squad.

And it’s the lack of any presence to prevent or take the supporter off that has got plenty of fans on social media miffed off.

Will Goodwin, who plays as a forward for Cheltenham, uploaded a clip of the incident, from another video and wrote: “No words for this ❌”

CLUB STATEMENT:

Plymouth Argyle would like to remind supporters that it is against the law to enter the pitch at any time and these actions could lead to a club ban and criminal record.

It is is also important that those playing the game, be that players, fans or officials can do so knowing they are safe and will not be subjected to violent, threatening or antisocial behaviour.

When we should only be talking about our 13th home win of the season, we are having to talk about an incident on the pitch involving a supporter, which brings only negative noise and feeling towards your club.

We are currently undertaking a full review of the incident in conjunction with the police and stewarding contractor.

We have identified the supporter and issued an indefinite ban.

For absolute clarity, the club holds a zero tolerance approach to behaviour of this type, and will proactively ensure that any individuals who encroach upon the pitch and/or pose a threat to the safety of any individual inside Home Park are issued the firmest sanctions.

We would like to apologise to Will Goodwin and all associated with Cheltenham Town and thank their players and officials for their professionalism and assistance.

Plymouth remain top of League One with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Cheltenham with the hosts taking control of the game after scoring two goals by the half hour mark.

Dan Scarr volleyed in Jordan Houghton’s cross while Ryan Hardie got onto Finn Azaz’s pass and fired home from the outside box.

Cheltenham reacted with Will Ferry kicking the ball back for Taylor Perry, who put it past the keeper five minutes before half time.

Town began the second half in ascendancy, but it was Argyle that grabbed the next goal.

Azaz once again proved to be a provider, putting Callum Wright in on goal for Argyle’s third goal on 64 minutes.

Alfie May found the bottom corner and reduced Plymouth’s lead six minutes after, then Jay Matete broke from defence, held off Ryan Broom and teed the ball to Sam Cosgrove, making it 4-2.

This is what Twitter users said as Plymouth speak out on the pitch invader who goaded a Cheltenham player…

@ShanePinnington: Should’ve give him a good slap mate 😂 well done for keeping your cool 👏

@B212Adam: Absolutely piss poor from @Argyle security! No way a fan should he be able to get up to a player and still no stewards in sight! @EFL @EFLTrust @EFL_Comms

@NathT563: I can honestly say that isn’t a complete reflection on us as a fan base, he was being boo’d by majority of the ground as soon as he entered the pitch, not sure how you didn’t react but fair play for not, I certainly hope he’s banned for life!

@SamA_R_D: Stewards gave the away fans a hard time about where we could and couldn’t sit getting people to move for no reason and yet when it came to something important like the players safety not 1 to be found. Embarrassing

@PAFC_Displays: We have several. None that we can use on here though. Every club has them, really don’t understand how this is funny, or seen as acceptable behaviour from people who do this. Pleased the club have acted swiftly to issue a ban. #pafc #ctfc

@JPArgyle21: Zero response from stewards when they invaded the pitch was very worrying. The guy was just allowed to do whatever he wanted! Shocking.

@cleevecomment: Good and prompt response Argyle! Quite right to ask stewarding contractors for answers too!👏. Thankfully Will acted with good sense…which I again see you recognised. GL for rest of season.

@CR130298: Not even a mention of the stewards who clearly can’t do their job properly?

@wozzer1964: The security firm have to provide answers. If they are incapable of ensuring player safety how can we have confidence in them keeping fans safe?

@StevieWotsa: Please don’t let this one off incident impact the treatment of the decent fans. I fear now the stewards may become overzealous due to this. It was very disappointing to see this yesterday very!

@zakbrownz: Always one who ruins it, I’m sure he’ll enjoy his day out at the courts.

@chapperslfc14: Stewards did nothing.

@Abi_ctfc: Now get better stewards

@NikPAFC: Have to agree with the general consensus that the stewards are very poor. They stand around chattingand seem to pay no attention to their work. I don’t know if it’s a lack of training or poor leadership – likely a confluence of both but, they may as well not be there.

@pafcdave2020: More stewards blocking fans from getting into block 3 than this bloke had chasing him on the pitch

@RhubarbRhubar10: Stewards too busy telling away fans that we could not sit in certain rows of seats despite being told on entry sut where you like. No reasons given. Poor stewarding all round and certainly not an enjoyable afternoon when you are afraid to cough in fear of being told off.
