Permutations for the Premier League and EFL – 25th April 2024

Time to see those permutations for the Premier League and the EFL with Leagues One and Two also going into the final day.

There is still so much that needs confirmation, who will be in the playoffs of the Championship, League One and League Two?

Who could go up and who could do down across divisions? Take a look below…

In the Premier League, defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday evening has left Sheffield United one game away from dropping back into the Championship.

Should they be defeated away to Newcastle United on Saturday, their fate will sealed regardless of results elsewhere.

Promotion and Play-Off race

Leicester City can seal promotion with a win in their penultimate fixture away at Preston North End on Monday night.

They also could already be celebrating by that point however if Leeds United were to lose on Friday away at Queens Park Rangers.

Leeds and Ipswich Town can still secure automatic promotion and the title, whilst Southampton are still mathematically able to finish second.

West Brom and Norwich City occupy the remaining playoff places with two games left to play, with Hull City sitting three points behind.

8th-placed Coventry City would require three wins out of three in their remaining games and for Norwich City or West Brom to lose both of theirs, as well as one defeat for Hull, to stand a chance of a top-six finish.

Relegation

If Huddersfield fail to beat Birmingham City on Saturday, or Sheffield Wednesday pick up a point against West Brom, the Terriers will be relegated.

Blues will also go down if they lose, coupled with wins for Plymouth Argyle and Wednesday, and a draw for Blackburn Rovers.

Promotion and Play-Offs

Derby County need one point to secure automatic promotion on the final day of the season at home to Carlisle United.

Third place Bolton know they will need a win away at Peterborough United, plus a Derby defeat, coupled with a swing in goal difference of at least four goals to snatch second place.

Barnsley, Lincoln City, Oxford United and Blackpool will battle it out for the final two playoffs spots on the last day of the season.

Relegated

If Cheltenham Town fail to beat Stevenage on the final day, they will be relegated. A win for Burton Albion and a point for Cambridge United would guarantee both League One safety.

Play-Off race

MK Dons have secured a Play-Off spot. Doncaster Rovers, Crewe Alexandra and Barrow occupy the remaining three spots, but Crawley Town, Bradford City and Walsall remain in the hunt.

Relegated

Forest Green Rovers have been relegated.

If Colchester United pick up a point in their final day fixture at home to Crewe, Sutton United will be relegated.

Determining league positions

There is a scenario by which Colchester and Sutton could potentially finish the regular season level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

As things stand Colchester sit in 22nd on 44 points, three points and one place above Sutton United. However, if Colchester were to lose 1-0 against Crewe Alexandra on the final day, and Sutton were to win 3-0 against MK Dons, the two teams would be level on points, goal difference and goals scored, as well as a tied head-to-head record.

If these results were to occur, then, as per the EFL Regulations, the final relegation place would be decided by the number of wins recorded across the campaign. Because Colchester United have won 11 games compared to the nine of Sutton United, Sutton would be relegated.

However, in the hypothetical event that both teams were level on wins as well as all previously mentioned factors, the next deciding factor would be the number of goals scored in away games.

If Clubs were still level, the provisions of Regulation 9.4 would come into play, which states that the highest placed Club would be the one which has accumulated the lowest total number of penalty points during a season, before looking at the lowest number of sending off offences.

If none of the above procedures were to separate the Clubs, a play-off decider would take place under arrangements determined by the League.
