CLUB STATEMENT:
Wigan Athletic is pleased to confirm the signing of experienced striker Paul Mullin from Wrexham AFC, subject to EFL and FA approval, and international clearance.
Mullin has signed a season-long loan deal at the Brick Community Stadium and arrives in Wigan on the back of helping the Welsh outfit become the first team in the history of English football’s top five divisions to secure three successive promotions.
The 30-year-old adds further strength to Ryan Lowe’s striking department ahead of the 2025/26 Sky Bet League One season, with his EFL experience set to be invaluable both on and off the field.
After spells in both Liverpool and Huddersfield Town’s youth set-ups, Mullin made his senior bow at Morecambe shortly after his arrival in the summer of 2014. Spending three years with the Shrimps, Mullin made over a century of appearances and played his part in helping them avoid relegation to the National League.
A season stay at Swindon Town preceded a move back up north to Tranmere Rovers, where Mullin won the first EFL promotion of his career at the end of the 2018/19 season.
In the search for more regular first-team football, Mullin then joined Cambridge United in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, a move that later became permanent in the following summer.
It was at the Abbey Stadium where Mullin started to thrive and become red hot on the goal trail. He was voted as the League Two Player of the Season, with his remarkable 32 goals inspiring the U’s to win promotion back to the Third Tier.
What happened next in Mullin’s career changed the striker’s life forever, with the 30-year-old joining Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s revolutionised Red Dragons in a bid to help them climb up the English football pyramid.
As they say, the rest is history, and Mullin has since catapulted to stardom and become a household name all over the world, thanks to the award-winning ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Disney+ documentary.
The main protagonist in Wrexham’s high-profile story, Mullin has netted 110 goals in 172 outings across all competitions, making him the seventh highest scorer in the club’s 160-year history.
Having been Wrexham’s top scorer during their first two promotions under Hollywood ownership, Mullin was again involved as Wrexham made it an unprecedented trilogy last term by returning to the Championship for the first time in over two decades.
Creating an unforgettable legacy at the Racecourse Ground – even making a surprise cameo in the blockbuster Marvel film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ – Mullin will now head to the Brick Community Stadium for the 2025/26 campaign, looking to make a huge impact during his time in WN5.
He becomes Latics’ third acquisition of the summer, following the arrivals of Kilmarnock midfielder Fraser Murray and Portsmouth marksman Christian Saydee.
Discussing his move to the Brick Community Stadium, Paul Mullin said:
“I’m excited for the next part of my story. The Gaffer has outlined his plan for the season, and I’m hoping to take his trust into the season and make it a really successful one.
“As a player, I give absolutely everything and work as hard as I can.
“I’ve scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything, I give my absolute all for the Club that I’m playing for, and I’m going to do that again with Wigan.”
“I’m excited for the next part of my story,” he told Latics TV.
“Being from Liverpool, you already feel like you have a lot in common. He (The Gaffer) has outlined his plan for the season and I’m hoping to take his trust into the season and make it a really successful one.
“You want not just the Coach but your teammates, the fans and around the Club to support and believe in you. To come and have the Gaffer’s faith already is really good, and hopefully that will be repaid with good performances this year.
“The Gaffer said that it’s a young squad and he wanted to add some experience to it to help them along. Throughout my career, I’ve experienced a lot of aspects, and if there’s any way I can help the young lads, I will always try and do that.
“You hopefully do that first and foremost by performing, and setting examples that way. If anyone needs advice, I’ll always be there to try and help the changing room be successful.
“The last few years for me have been phenomenal – and they’ve (Wrexham AFC) had a lot of media attention and recognition.
“Even the season before I started for Wrexham, I broke the League Two goals record for the most goals in a season, so it’s been a good five years of constantly scoring goals. My aim is to come here and hopefully to continue to score some goals.”
Asked what Wigan Athletic supporters should expect from Paul Mullin in a Latics shirt, the striker expressed that maximum effort will always be at the base of his performances.
“As a player, I give absolutely everything and work as hard as I can. No matter what, I give 100%.
“I’ve scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything, I give my absolute all for the Cluj that I’m playing for, and I’m going to do that again with Wigan.”
Head Coach Ryan Lowe added:
“I am delighted that we’ve managed to sign Paul. He’ll be a great addition to the group and is a player who is a proven goal scorer in the EFL.
“He has won promotion in his last three seasons with Wrexham AFC and will add firepower, know-how and experience to the group, which is really important.
“He is here because he is hungry to score more goals, win games and contribute to Wigan Athletic Football Club.
“Paul is the type of character we want in the dressing room, and his experience will help support the team on and off the pitch.”
Sporting Director Gregor Rioch commented:
“We’re really pleased to have brought Paul to Wigan Athletic. We’ve been looking to add an experienced goal scorer to the squad for some time, and Paul fits that profile perfectly.
“His professionalism, work ethic, and wealth of experience make him a natural addition to our team. We believe he will not only provide immediate quality on the pitch but also serve as a valuable role model for our younger players.
“Paul is a forward who can lead the line effectively and possesses the attributes in front of goal that we’ve been looking for.
“We’d also like to extend our thanks to Wrexham AFC for facilitating the move, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Paul can achieve during his time with us.”
