Oxford City sack manager and quickly re-appoint boss who departed over four months ago

Oxford City sack manager Sam Cox and quickly re-appoint boss Ross Jenkins who departed the club over four months ago.

He left on the 15th of May 2024, and then became the manager of Boreham Wood, who on the 12th of September 2024, sacked him just weeks into the 2024/25 season.

At the time of Jenkins being sacked by Boreham Wood, they had earned 12 points from their opening eight games in the National League South and sat in 10th position, with the Wood winless in four though only been defeated twice this season.

On the 13th of September 2024, Luke Garrard returned to Boreham Wood as manager following the sacking of Ross Jenkins.

Who’d have thought we’d see both managers back at the clubs they were at when the 2023/24 season was coming to an end.

Oxford City currently sit 23rd in the National League North with 6 points from 9 games played, while Boreham Wood are 9th in the National League South with 15 points from 9 games played.

OXFORD CITY STATEMENT:

Oxford City Football Club can confirm the appointment of Ross Jenkins as our new Manager following the departure of Sam Cox and Assistant Manager Liam Badcock.

While we are delighted to welcome Ross back we would like to place on record our thanks to Sam and Liam for their efforts during their time at Court Place Farm.

Ross needs little introduction to City fans having guided the club to promotion to the National League for the first time in our history in 2024. During his first spell in charge the club achieved back-to-back play-off campaigns in the National League South and also reached the first round ‘proper’ of the FA Cup.

Owner Justin Merritt said

“It’s never easy to part company with a Manager. Sam is a very talented coach who was the outstanding candidate in the summer. His philosophy aligned perfectly to Oxford City matched with an inspiring personality. I’d like to thank Sam and Liam for their work and wish them well for the future.

“Ross is an outstanding manager who knows the club, the players and will come in and hit the ground running from day one. His knowledge, professionalism and desire to achieve are exactly what we need coupled with an extensive network within the game. I am excited about the opportunity to work with Ross again”.

Ross said

“It’s a club that I know inside out with a hugely talented group of players. Results haven’t gone their way so far but we will work hard and that will turn – there is still a long way to go this season. I can’t wait to get started. We have a massive game in the FA Cup on Saturday so I’ll take training today, talk to the players, and then all of our energy will go in to getting this club back to where it belongs.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Oxford City sack their manager and quickly re-appoint boss who departed over four months ago…

@p_franklin5: Well who didn’t see that coming 😳

@iamkempy: Mighty Jenkins

@leighgrant74: Welcome back Ross

@Callum_OUFC: we are so back

@LeapfrogMark: Nice bloke, clearly out of his depth and I’m surprised it took so long. Welcome back Ross Jenkins – time to turn this season round.

@jaydyer28: Brilliant decision

@wallidan: Way too quick to make change but indicative of football mentality these days. Good luck to Sam whom I believe will thrive elsewhere.

@tomhwilliams23: Who saw this coming?! Huge shame for Sam Cox after last season at Wealdstone. Showed some promise as a coach; I’m sure he will be back. This is a harder job than the one Jenkins left, in as much that they’re now in NLN (more travel). If anyone can turn it round, it’s Jenkins 💪

@MarkNealOx: Sad to see you go and it didn’t work out @TheSamCox. Great bloke. Lovely parents too.

@NickDuGard1: Not at all surprised at this announcement..

@FootballFa7004: It wasn’t working with young Sam, good to have Ross back 🔵⚪👍

@DorsetHoop24424: Sad that things didn’t work out for young Sam but glad to have Ross back in the hot seat 🔵⚪👍

@foreverayellow: was a shame to see him go, national league incredibly proved too tough last season, interesting however, he struggled with boreham wood in the national league south, and moved back to oxford city, in a tougher division, the national league north. hope he can turn city’s form around this season
