There has been widespread outrage as one referee awards a ridiculous penalty that knocks the underdogs out of the FA Cup.
Isthmian League Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic were sent out of the oldest national football competition in the world last weekend thanks to a shocking decision to give visitors Ebbsfleet United a spot kick.
After taking the lead through Daniel Bassett on the 7th minute, the hosts looked like they were about to make a cup upset against the National League South side.
Carshalton were 1nil up in their Fa Cup tie against Ebbsfleet at the weekend when the Ref awarded this penalty against them! They went on to lose 2-1 What?!! How!? What?!
Ridiculous decision!!
Honestly think the game should be replayed!!!! @CarshaltonA_FC π#Justice4Carshalton pic.twitter.com/xV0EeVvOHvβ β½π £π π π ’π π π €π £β½οΈ (@toptargets) September 21, 2021
However, nine minutes later, referee Paul Johnson pointed to the spot after judging an Ebbsfleet player to have fallen inside the penalty area when in fact he has fallen over himself.
The official thought Luke Read had fouled the winger because he was handed a yellow card just seconds later.
As you can quite clearly see, the replays show that Read was nowhere near the Ebbsfleet man and the latter tripped.
After Rakish Bingham scored the rebound of the penalty, the Fleet went on to secure a victory with two minutes remaining, with many citing Johnson’s decision as the turning point.
Carshalton commented on the incident on their official website.
“The Robins’ FA journey was ended by a refereeing mistake. A penalty (and yellow card) were mistakenly given without players even making contact. It’s a bitter pill to swallow after such a gallant and brave performance.
“There are no hard feelings towards the referee or linesman. We are sure it was a genuine mistake, albeit a very damaging one.”
Ebbsfleet are now set to travel to Aylesbury United on Saturday the 2nd of October for the next round of the competition.
Fans reacted, some with outrage as the referee awards a ridiculous penalty which knocks the underdogs out of the FA Cup…
@mattcrabb11: I suspect that ref will be doing a game somewhere at conference south level this weekend too. #needssacking
@kennymccreadie9: FFS the referee should get fined and banned simply not good enough
@martinbaston: How has the Lino not seen it? He is bang in line! Both should be doing parks football that is awful
@tamz03748733: No way no fucking way is this real
@SteveR29128994: Crazy, refs had a brown envelope
@SteveBa99880334: What really surprised me is who the ref is. I think his name is Paul and heβs been at step 3 for a long time. Probably the best ref Iβve seen and a really nice bloke. However this decision is beyond belief. Iβm surprised by the players reaction as well, hardly anyone said a word
@SatNavtheGooner: The whole clip is surreal and indeed showed the discipline of some of those players, so hats off to them in a really difficult situation
@massp79: The attacker should have been honest and told the red he didnβt get fouled. We keep on blaming the refs but players also have to take some responsibility and not cheat.
@MF_Power: Thatβs the most crooked decision Iβve ever seen. Wowzers
@beefyleboeuf: Refereeing is the only job I know that you get paid rather than sacked for being awful at. If I performed to that level at my job Iβd be straight out the door
@Wigwam94: Wow. That’s an absolute shocker. The refs entirely invented something there. My local team is in the Conference & it’s lovely to see them playing again but I’d forgotten how terrible the refereeing is at lower levels. There’s a reason these refs aren’t in the league. Awful
@andyfooly: Id love to get a referees view on this, there is nothing blocking the view & there is daylight between the players. baffling.
@jords_i4: This ref had a bet on. Thereβs no other reason for this
@callumptaylor: Understand referees come under fire, but where on earth was the linesman watching to miss that in front of him?!
@ClarkeDdmthe1st: Both officials need sacking or teaching of the footballing rules because that is shocking!!
