Notts County keeper left red-faced after gifting Swindon goal in huge howler

Notts County keeper Sam Slocombe was left red-faced after gifting Swindon a goal in a huge howler on Friday afternoon.

It came in the 73rd minute, with Sam Slocombe’s misplaced pass meeting Glatzel, who took advantage of the gift and slotted the ball into the empty net.

Before that, Aaron Drinan found the back of the net for the third time in four games, capitalising on two defensive errors to help Swindon secure a 2-1 victory over Notts County and end their four-match winless run.

Swindon took the lead in the 19th minute in a bizarre turn of events, with Scott Robertson’s attempted back pass hitting the post and falling to Drinan, netting from close range.

Then with under 20 minutes remaining, Town forward Glatzel latched onto the end of a loose pass, and from distance as he chipped Sam Slocombe from distance.

Despite a late consolation goal from substitute Alassana Jatta, Notts County’s downward spiral in the league standings continued as Swindon gained all three points.

Meanwhile, Opta state that Notts County have scored 76 goals and conceded 75 goals in League Two this season. They are only the second side in England’s top four tiers this century to both score and concede 75+ goals in a season, along with Peterborough in 2010-11 (106 for, 75 against).

Notts County boss Stuart Maynard: “If you look at the two errors they are horrendous – really bad, really bad errors that cost us.

“I think they had one effort in the first half that they hit the crossbar and it was good play from them – they got down the side and crossed it.

“But I think we had the best moment in the first half right at the start of the game (David McGoldrick’s shot saved after a three-on-three breakaway) and I think if you go 1-0, it’s a different game. But yes, it’s a tough one to take.

“Obviously, it’s tough for the fans, and I feel their frustration. We’re all frustrated.

“If we were getting opened up and outplayed, then you can kind of accept it.

“But it’s unforced errors that we’re making at the minute and it’s been that trend since I’ve been here really, if you look at the goals that we’ve conceded.”

Swindon interim head coach Gavin Gunning said, per Swindon Advertiser: “I was so pleased with how we played, we subdued them in what they were able to do where the game counts in and around the penalty area.

“They went from side to side and backwards to stack passes and never really had any clear-cut chances. “It worked really well and the shape was fantastic, the communication was key.

“And then when we got on transition when the ball turned over, we looked like we were going to score every time.

“We have had a lot more clear chances than them today and they had all of the ball.

“We have had a couple of bad performances of late, but most of them have been decent and today we were the better team.

“We went away from our normal game plan a bit and conceded the space in their territory and then we would turn the press on with our triggers.

“As soon as they got into our territory we would turn it over, so I was really happy with how that looked.”

We have more switched into working on our out-of-possession stuff this week and at times it was probably my fault with how we have looked.

“We have locked in out-of-possession and thought, can we be compact? Can we be solid in this game? Because we knew they were going to be massively possession-based.

“Can we strike on the counter and on their weaknesses? We did that really well today.

“Maybe we didn’t do enough work on the attacking transitions because it was a little bit clunky, but it was still very good at times.”

Twitter users reacted after seeing the Notts County keeper left red-faced after gifting Swindon a goal in a huge howler…

@OneTheDonDada: We need a compilation so we can see how many goals we have conceded this season have been from mistakes because it’s got be at least close to 30 of them

@Grezza1862: We need to be investigated for match fixing

@Ryannn_NCFC: And Maynard will still pick him on Monday.

@The1Gleb: Still can’t understand his decision in this situation.

@7qcj9qgpvf: My condolences, that’s hard to watch.

@glasshayd: HAHAHAHAH why has he not just passed it to the player on the left, this screams match fixing.

@MeadowLane1862: Slocombe is useless

@atr0phis: And that’s why you don’t play Slocombe ffs.

@willbanks02: what in earth is wrong with this football team? why do you only ever concede the worst goals i’ve ever seen

@burnsieboy65: 16th placed Notts County have scored 77 goals in Div 2 this season (3rd highest scorers) however they’ve also conceded 76, the most in that league, fair to say you can see why if this is anything to go by.

@tnekmail: What the fuck are they on at County? Two goals conceded today are woefully bad.

@SCFCJosh96: one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen on a football video

@NottsCountyBen: The brothers need to do the right thing and sack him, he’s destroying the foundations that they and luke Williams have built… GET HIM GONE!!!

@RobiMurf: Clear your desk Stu

@Bottman94: He might be a nice guy but he just isn’t up for it enough is enough before it spirals out of control

@JRBrad8: I’ve said it from day 1. Maynard was not the right choice at all. That back line is just awful, including the keeper Slocombe. Sunday pub style defending. Please now Mr chairman, do the right thing whilst we still have time. So embarrassing.

@BigTom0491: Absolute laughing stock!! Majority those players are not fit to wear the shirt! Utter disgrace with sheer lack of effort and embarrassing errors!! Why on earth SM left Jatta on the bench for 70mins! They can all do one!

@Carl282woo: Well, that was awful. Massive overhaul needed or we’re heading back to the NL.

@swampdonkey1862: Regardless of fault…. I think even Stuart Maynard must know this isn’t working.

@James_Hann: Guess the only team who let me down on my coupon today 🙃

@Callum_SR: Manager aside there is genuinely no reason for a few of those cowards to ever play again for us. What’s the point

@MichaelHender22: A complete gift, this lot.

@aidan_19923: Maynard has to go. End of.

@hjedwards_: hahahahaha get rid of the lot

@andrewl1701774: Shocking game gifted 2 goals always playing backwards and into trouble, the only time we attack in last 5mins Jatta scores 🤷‍♂️ he got to go

@PhillyD55: So much excitement, so much hope, so much expectation gone in the space of 3 months. Ok so we were punching by competing for top 3 but we should be challenging for top 7. We’re literally gonna finish 20th. I do feel sorry for the guy. It’s not all his fault but it ain’t working…

@Stephen_Mills85: We are, without doubt, the worst team in the football league. The table does lie. Had it not been for our great start to the season, we’d be staring relegation in the face.

@BDHEleven11: Players have downed tools, embarrassing themselves…

@PeteNCFC1862: Abysmal, nowhere near good enough, how have we become so damn poor , that was lacking in effort, desire , those are two qualities that are difficult to accept a lack of in a supporters eyes , error’s galore for the season, sickening decline 🖤🤍

@comrie1990: It’s not the fact we have Sunday league defenders who are creators of their own downfall that bothers me at this point, it’s that we have a manager who shows no emotion of the touchline. Stood there with his hands in his pockets as we go 2-0 down. A manager with no backbone!

@MilkmanHero: How long can this go on for without the change? Another loss on Monday will see fallout that’ll make tonight look like a picnic.
