Nottingham Forest embarrass Brighton with extraordinary 7-0 win to have City Ground bouncing

Nottingham Forest embarrass Brighton with an extraordinary 7-0 win to have the City Ground bouncing in delight at the thumping victory.

Forest move level on points with Arsenal in second while recording their biggest league win since a 7-0 victory over Chelsea in the top-flight in April 1991.

They tightened their grip on the race for Champions League qualification with Chris Wood hitting a hat-trick.

It was an own goal after 12 minutes. Morgan Gibbs-White got behind the Brighton defence and sent a low cross into the box which goes in-off Lewis Dunk who tried to make a clearance but the ball came off him and ended up in the net.

On 25th minutes, the hosts doubled their lead, Morgan Gibbs-White marked his 100th appearance for Forest with a glancing header from Anthony Elanga’s corner.

The woodwork was struck on 28 minutes, after Matz Sels made a terrific save to keep out Yankuba Minteh, Forest twice went close to scoring, Neco Williams hit the base of the post from distance before Chris Wood forced a finger-tip save from Bart Verbruggen.

It was 3-0 with 31 minutes gone, Chris Wood, left unmarked to meet Anthony Elanga’s cross, headed it past Bart Verbruggen.

Just before half time, Brighton thought they’ve got one back after Danny Welbeck’s attempt from about 16 yards hit the underside of the bar.

Chris Wood made it 4-0 on 64 minutes, tapping home from close range after another Anthony Elanga assist.

67 minutes it was a penalty to Forest. Tariq Lamptey brought down Morgan Gibbs-White. Chris Wood sent Bart Verbruggen the wrong way for his hat-trick.

It was 6-0 on 88 minutes, Neco Williams rifled home moments after substitute Taiwo Awoniyi’s attempt is parried. Brighton felt there was a handball in the build-up but the goal stood.

Forest were 7-0 up on 90 minutes. The home fans were still celebrating the sixth goal. Brighton gave the ball away on the edge of their own box and Jota Silva made them pay.

‘We want eight, we want eight’ sang the Forest fans.

Nottingham Forest are just the second side in Premier League history to lose a game by five or more goals and then win their next game by five or more goals.

The only previous side to do so were Sheffield Wednesday in November 1997, who followed up a 6-1 defeat at Manchester United with a 5-0 win at home v Bolton.

Man of the match Chris Wood speaking to TNT Sports: “What a difference a week can make. Down in the dumps after last week. It wasn’t us, it wasn’t like us, but today that was definitely us.

“It is all credit to the team. This lad [Elanga] puts it on a plate for me so it makes my job easier every time. Then Morgs [Gibbs-White] handed me the penalty for the hat-trick. It’s fantastic, the boys have done superbly showing character to come back from last week. That is what we’re about.”

On his partnership with Anthony Elanga: “We know the relationship that we have. We have that bond, the connection and he does superbly for me and it shows in the statistics. A hat-trick of assists never goes unnoticed. The boy is on flames.”

Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White speaking to TNT Sports about Anthony Elanga’s performance: “He is incredible. He is incredibly fast so you just know to put it in the space [in behind] and he will get there. He has been really knuckling down on his work this year, on his end product, it has been incredible. As you can see today he has got three assists, so credit to him.

“I think he deserves a little bit more credit than what he’s been getting, because he works so hard on and off the pitch.”

On Chris Wood’s performance: “He is just one of those strikers that you know where he is going to be, where he wants to receive the ball. This season he has just been so clinical. A real delight to play with.

“Off the ball he works so hard for us, I don’t think people notice that as much, and that is one of his main strengths. He never gives up and is always fighting for any little tap in. And those are the best goals.

“[In the dressing room] He is mature, he is sensible. He’s someone you go to if there needs to be questions asked.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Nottingham Forest embarrass Brighton with an extraordinary 7-0 win to have City Ground bouncing…

@red_till_death: Don’t think I’ve ever seen a squad togetherness like this one in the 30+ years I’ve been a fan! To put in a performance like that off the back of a 5-0 thrashing is something else. Nuno is something special and to think some would have rather been relegated with Cooper 😂 #NFFC

@eastwoodred86: Outstanding. What a mentality these lads have coming back and playing like that. #nffc

@Mark_Searby: Someone call the RSPB. There’s been a culling of seagulls in Nottingham today 😘 #NFFC

@liamevansnffc: Just got back from the match and one word describes us today is incredible. That formation suits us perfectly. I even thought we had a lot more of the ball and done well with it instead of the low block. Singing we want 7 and then get the 7th is mind-blowing… love it #NFFC

@mattwheelerdj: What a performance, best since being back in the prem absolutely dominated the game , we smelt blood and didn’t give Brighton a cat in hells chance. pleased for Neco scoring been sensational down that left since getting back into the side . #nffc
