Journalist Mark Carruthers spoke following the game: “So just back from a rather extraordinary night for when he cast out under 21s, claiming a 3-0 win against Fulham.
“The pre-match story was all about the fact that Sean Neve, Leo Shahar and Aidan Harris were all in the Magpies side after being part of the first team squad for Wednesday night’s Champions League playoff first leg against Qarabag.
” Neve actually opened the scoring with a penalty after he’d been brought down. The second goal scorer however was a little bit less expected.
“It was actually Harris, the goalkeeper Aidan Harris. Really highly rated within the Newcastle’s academy. Just come back from a really good loan spell with Northern Irish club Coleraine.
“He had the ball in the edge of his own box for a clearance. Its caught the wind and it just sailed over the Fulham keeper and into the net. Quite extraordinary. Aidan didn’t know quite what to do with himself.
“I think it’s always difficult when goalkeepers score, unless it’s obviously a last minute equaliser or a winner. You kind of feel that kind of goalkeeper’s union comes in where they don’t want to celebrate in front of another goalkeeper. But an incredible moment, something I’d never experienced.
“Second half, really controlled performance from Newcastle. They’ve had a lot of stick the under-21s this year, but it was unquestionably for me the best performance of the season.
“Michael Mills, another youngster that’s had a really big week, signed his first pro deal at Newcastle, turned 17 and now has his first under-21s goal, a really calm finish after he was played in.
“In behind the Fulham defence, one defender got back with him, checked inside him and just rolled it past the keeper, really good finish.
“A lot of excitement about Mills and you can see why. He’s really starting to develop into a really exciting winger, someone who could be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks and months.
“But yeah, just a really nice performance. Mason Miley, course, brother of Lewis Miley came on and played it right back, which isn’t his position, but much like his older brother, did look very at home in that position.
“But it does feel difficult and a little bit harsh to single out any Newcastle players from the 21s tonight because it was a real team performance. A good clean sheet, a well-in clean sheet for a solid defensive display.
“Munda and Bailey in midfield were excellent again, really solid. But obviously the headlines will go to Neve for getting a goal on his under-21s return and to Aidan Harris for the goalkeeper scoring as well.
“I’d imagine Harris, Shahar and Neve will be in the first team’s squad again for the second leg. I wouldn’t rule out certainly two of the three, probably Shahar and Neve getting first team minutes.
“Obviously Neve making his first team debut in the first leg earlier this week. So good night for when you’re casting at it under 21s.”
