Morecambe v Burton Albion sees what fans on social media claim to be one the worst non-offside calls ever seen this weekend.

While it may not have mattered all too much considering the Shrimps were at the time 4-0 up, the moment is still going viral online as the views grow.

Burton said in their match report: “Watts added a fifth for Morecambe on 83 minutes despite being yards offside and allowed to run through right in front of the assistant referee.

“Substitute Arthur Gnahoua, also clearly offside, was then allowed to race on and set Watts up for what would have been a sixth but the striker blazed over.”

They also wrote earlier in the summary: “A third change saw Davis Keillor-Dunn pushed into attack in place of Kamwa but Albion almost conceded a fifth moments after the forward had come on, Watts, looking suspiciously offside, was allowed to run through but was thwarted by Garratt.

Morecambe simply wrote: “The Shrimps made it 5-0 in the final five minutes as Caleb Watts beat the offside trap to go on and sneak the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper and seal a comprehensive victory for Morecambe on the opening day of 2023.”

The result sees Morecambe move off the bottom of the League One standings with a second successive victory as Derek Adams’ side demolished Burton.

The Shrimps took the lead in the 32nd minute, thanks to a long ball forward which caught out the Burton defence and even though Cole Stockton’s original shot had been blocked, the ball still fell to Kieran Phillips, poking home with ease.

Derek Adams’ side added a second in first-half stoppage time when another long ball was sent over, and Jensen Weir side-footed Ben Garratt’s clearance into the empty net.

It was a third for the hosts in the 51st minute, as half-time substitute Caleb Watts got on the scoresheet from from close-range.

Three minutes later Morecambe got their fourth as Phillips broke through, past the Burton defence again and beat Garratt with a neat finish.

And that’s where Watts got a second, Morecambe’s fifth, with a neat low finish past the a frustrated Garratt after another quick breakaway, but fans left surprised at how it wasn’t ruled out for offside.
