There is a mixed reaction from fans as Chester announce manager Calum McIntyre will leave at end of the 2025/26 season.
The board, after discussions, says this as the right time to part ways, following the recent poor results, but will give their full backing to McIntyre and his staff in the remaining 17 National League North games.
They aim for a play-off push and promotion push this season, looking to gain clarity to plan for 2026/27 and recruit a new manager whether that’s in the National League or the National League North.
They currently sit 12th with 37 points from 29 games played, and are 6 points from the playoff places, but have played more games than those above and around them.

CLUB STATEMENT:
Chester Football Club can today announce that Manager Calum McIntyre will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
Following extensive discussions, the Board of Directors has decided that the end of the current campaign is the right time to part company with Calum.
We strongly believe that Calum and his staff represent the football club’s best opportunity to achieve our target of securing a play-off place and competing for promotion this season, and they will continue to receive our full backing for the remaining 17 National League North fixtures, beginning today against Radcliffe.
All parties agree that ensuring clarity for our players, staff and supporters gives us the chance to have a complete focus on finishing this season as strongly as possible, while allowing the football club to plan for 2026/27 and begin the process of recruiting a new First Team Manager to take the club forward.
CFU Chair Nick Phillipson said: “The Board would firstly like to place on record its thanks to Calum and all members of the management team for their efforts during their time at Chester FC.
“All of us – directors, players and staff – recognise that results of late have not been good enough, and we are fully aware that the situation must improve if we are to achieve our target this season.
“We understand some people may question the timing, but the Board has given this full and proper consideration, and we feel that this is the right decision for the club for now and the future.
“Calum’s record speaks for itself in terms of play-off finishes, he retains the full support of the players, and everyone is clear on what is required over the next three months.
“We hope that this clarity about the future allows us all to have one focus until the end of the season – giving absolutely everything to try and make the play-offs and get our club promoted back to the National League.”
As mentioned, there was mixed reaction from fans as Chester announce that their manager will leave at the end of the season…
@Bobswillbebobss: Does this not seem like a weird decision? Makes more sense to either. 1 – Get rid now and we can salvage it by the end of the season. 2 – Keep him until the end of the season to see what happens to make a decision then. The middle ground writes off this season for no reason, no?
@JamescfcBeeton2: Time for a proper structure to be implemented now off the pitch, including recruitment and have some proper plans in place. Whoever the manager is at Chester there is way too much pressure on them to get it right all on their own. Wish cal all the best but this is best for all.
@smokyblacon1: Great bloke given us some great times over the last four years. I won’t say a bad word about him
@lewis_birkett: Written the season off then
@tommorrey1: Thanks for the good times Cal, played a huge part in turning the club around but ultimately the right call I think
@sam_cfc36: Mise well refund everyone’s season tickets then because this seasons a write off
@lampard_callum: Gutted. Been a real rough season but Cal has gave me some of the best memories I’ve ever had watching this club. He’s one of us and deserves our full support till the very end.💙 big job for whoever comes in
I get the decision, yet I don’t in some ways.
What if McIntyre goes and wins the play-offs and wins a promotion?
Do #ChesterFC suddenly go back on their decision, and keep him?
174 matches. 1.63 ppg.
Regardless, he’ll be hoping to go out on a high in charge of The Seals. https://t.co/LdMyjgu0ey pic.twitter.com/xiRQ3QmUac

@sandshufc: What happens if they make the play offs and takes them up? Odd to announce at this juncture, obviously just to appease the fans. Maybe someone we will consider at the end of the season seeing Caddis is out of contract too
@PhilHu66: Need a new manager appointment before the end of the season to give him time to review the squad and decide on who he wants to keep. No point waiting until the end of the season as that will put us behind in the transfer market again!
@cestrian_10: thanks cal, will rightly go down as a legend for a decade of service. welcome back anytime. last summer they blamed lack of planning time – now they have months. get on the phone to phil parkinson right now.
@noasmith66: brought the club back got us to a play off semi and a final brought us 2 fa cup first rounds what a gaffer massive shame it’s not working this season wish him the absolute best gives us everything 💙
@18SEALS85: Yeah it was his time to be fair. Thank you Callum, you’ve given us some of the best memories as Chester fans since reformation and I wish you the best in wherever you go next because they’ve got one hell of a manager. 💙
@SameliteCH4: Thanks for everything Cal. Brought the city back together and gave the club a new lease of life at the time
@MissKelly83xx: Will be gutted to see him go. He’s a good person who has the club at heart regardless of what some of the toxic fan base may think. Cal and the Board do not deserve the nasty personal attacks that they have been receiving. Now let’s get through the rest of the season ⚽️💙 🦭
@BlaconSeals: The right decision for all involved. 3 months to try & make a play off place. No more negativity, just support someone who loves our club as much as the next person. Some of the best moments following Chester have come in the last 3 seasons. One more time… Cal Mac Ole 🦭
