Middlesbrough fans put forward their crest design ideas as the club announce a plan to change it for the 150th anniversary.
The Championship outfit has recently announced plans for their upcoming 150th anniversary season, the 2026-27 season.
As part of the preparations for this significant milestone, the club will be unveiling a new club crest to replace the current emblem that has been in use since 2007.
The decision to introduce a fresh badge is a key element of the club’s strategy to honour its illustrious past and connect with its dedicated fan base.
Established in 1876, Middlesbrough FC holds a prominent position in the history of football as one of the oldest clubs globally.
The upcoming 2026-27 season represents a momentous occasion in the club’s legacy, and the unveiling of a new crest is deemed a fitting gesture.
Recognising the emblem’s significance to supporters, the club has emphasised its commitment to involving fans in the design process.

CLUB STATEMENT:
MFC are formulating plans to introduce a new crest in line with the club’s upcoming 150th anniversary.
In response to widespread fan feedback around the current crest, the club is exploring the opportunity to coincide with the 150th celebrations, with a view to implementing the new design for the 2026/27 season and beyond.
We recognise that the crest is among the most significant representations of our club and matters hugely to Boro supporters. As such, supporters will be involved thoroughly and extensively in this process. That will be accompanied with a robust tendering procedure to invite contributions from external design experts.
We also recognise that this process requires due care, consideration, and clear communication – hence our confirmation of these plans now, allowing for the requisite time to deliver the desired outcome for our supporters.
The current Middlesbrough FC crest has been in use since 2007.
Lee Fryett, MFC’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “We’re excited to announce our intentions as we approach a significant milestone in Middlesbrough FC’s history.
“Any crest that is adopted must represent that proud history and what the club means to our supporters, as well as our vision for the future. We’re looking forward to working closely with the fans throughout the process.”
More details around this project and how supporters and other contributors can get involved will follow in due course.
As mentioned, fans, including that of Middlesbrough, put forward crest design ideas as club plan to change it…
@Matt_Rowney: 1. Make the crest round again 2. Have 1876 on it, which you’d assume being an anniversary crest it will 3. Keep our lovely lion 4. Maybe add some Middlesbrough touches? The Transporter? The Bongo? A parmo? 😂 Can’t wait. This excites me way more than it should. #Boro #UTB
@relfyoftheboro:The majority of our fan base feels the same. When it was changed there was no consultation and the leaked images looked like something from a GCSE art class. Most of us would’ve been happy with changing the date which was the chairman’s main rationale for changing the badge.
@Keynes39: The older one is a classic but I actually really like the modern one, one of few updates that look great. I hope they don’t revert – too many round simple badges nowadays for me
@blainalllinson: Prayers up for all the boro dads & their leg tattoos 😂
@NahItsLyingTho: Good to see that few hundred thousand pounds you’ll have squeezed out of the most economically deprived fans in the country is being put to good use 👍🏼 Playing to the gallery 101, fair play, they’ve lapped it right up.
@hannah_tbhh: bring old one back
@JarkkoLehtinen: Personally I think the current one is the best. But also liked the plain lion of early 1980’s.
@Jooky85: If @NickBudrewicz isn’t all over this I’ll be so sad!
@KitCrimes: There’ll be a new badge for Boro from 2026. Never liked the ‘new’ one in a shield, which they’ve had since 2007, much prefer the round 1986 crest.
@TheCas_16: Enough with the round crests, ffs. Football is starting to look like one of those weird PES 6 patches.
@ColinPep1: So many clubs changed to round crests that are near identical. Middlesbrough actually had a nice round crest already and changed it. Would be nice if they went back to something close to the previous crest, rather than a copy of the style of Man City, Harrogate, Stevenage et al.

@Erimus1876: Would like to see a freshened up version of the one before, 1876 on it. End of the day it’s the badge we got to cup finals, European cup final and finally a trophy with. It’s linked to a period of success for the club.
