Michael Owen reveals he NEVER wanted to move to Newcastle, and claims it is NOT a ‘big club’

Michael Owen has left Newcastle United supporters waking up this morning reeling after he launched an attack on his former club.

After ending his 13 year stay with Liverpool, he headed to Real Madrid but became out of favour in one season so headed back to England and joined Newcastle United – a club he reveals he never wanted to move to.

In his new book ‘Reboot’, he says as quoted by Daily Mail: “My move to Newcastle was one I really regret – I should have followed my gut instincts from the start. I didn’t want to go there – my heart was still set on a return to Liverpool.

“Liverpool couldn’t match Newcastle’s offer. From a career perspective, there was no doubt in my mind that a move to the North East was a downward step.”

Around 20,000 supporters turned up to see Owen unveiled after he made the move from Real Madrid to become their record signing in 2005 on a deal he says saw him earn around £120,000 a week.

Though his relationship with them became strained and starting to get negative chants sung directed at him.

He goes on: “When I got home, I switched on Match Of The Day to watch the game and I could hear Newcastle fans, my fans, singing ‘what a waste of money!’ as I’m being stretchered off.

“I can’t deny their actions that day changed things for me. No longer was I even going to attempt to ingratiate myself with the fans. Instead, I flipped it in a slightly more resentful way thinking, I don’t need to justify myself to f****** Newcastle fans.”

He also claimed that they only get deemed a big club because of the size of their fanbase.

He said: “This kind of blind delusion is especially true of Newcastle United – which, as I reach for the nearest tin hat, is only a big club in the sense that it has a lot of fans and a big stadium.

“They’re historically not successful off the pitch, in fact quite the opposite mostly. And they’ve never really won much on it in recent times.”

If that weren’t enough to get Magpies fans angry, he also brought up his feud with club legend Alan Shearer.

Owen said: “Sadly, this feud has continued to the present day. The more I think about it, the more I understand why Alan behaves the way he does and continues to spread negativity about me whenever he can.

“At no time did I get the impression that he saw things any differently. To put it simply, there has been a lot of lies, bullshit and general mis-information surrounding the end of my time at Newcastle.”

After reading of Michael Owen’s criticism towards his former club Newcastle United, fans took to vent their anger but also mock him – see what they had to say on the next page.
