Michael Beale refuses to shake Trai Hume’s hand in Sunderland’s defeat at Birmingham

Michael Beale refuses to shake Trai Hume’s hand in Sunderland’s defeat at Birmingham with footage emerging on social media.

Tony Mowbray’s Blues produced a comeback win over his former Black Cats side, putting more misery on Beale, who came in as his successor.

Birmingham securing back-to-back victories in the Championship for the first time since October in front of a packed out St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon.

After conceding a goal from Jack Clarke in a lacklustre first half, Blues managed to turn the tide with a leveller from Jordan James, followed by a decisive close-range winner from Koji Miyoshi in the 80th minute.

A turnout of 27,449, the largest home attendance in over seven years, marked a double triumph for Blues manager Tony Mowbray who had emerged victorious in this fixture as the Sunderland manager back in November.

Having previously suffered three consecutive defeats against the Black Cats, Blues’ Miyoshi, who had also scored at the Stadium of Light, netted his fifth goal of the season to secure all three points and propel the hosts to 15th place in the league table.

But the talking point come full time surrounds Hume’s handshake being snubbed by Beale.

The manager has said he didn’t see Trai Hume and will quickly go to clarify the situation with the defender, yet unhappy fans are sceptical by his response.

“I didn’t see him, to be honest,” Beale told BBC Radio Newcastle, per Sunderland Echo.

“Trai passed a fitness test to play today and he was on a booking, so it was easier to keep Leo on when we made the change. If I’ve missed him, I’ll have to go and see him now and say that to him. Listen, he is probably as close to me as any other player in the squad. There was nothing there between me and him, I honestly didn’t see him.”

In his post-match interview with club media, Beale separately praised Hume for his dedication in playing through the knock he had picked up a couple of days previous.

“What people won’t know is, players like Trai Hume playing after a fitness test – going to the well for us,” Beale said.

“I absolutely love him for the mentality that he has.”

“We play well first-half and we were worthy of our lead,” Beale said, per Sunderland Echo.

“Great save from John Ruddy from Romaine just before half-time as well. We knew what was going to come. The crowd was going to get up and they were going to press. I felt we cause our own problems by playing backwards and sideways too much. We needed to maybe play down the sides. We spoke about it at half-time. We didn’t execute second-half.

“The guys I brought into the game didn’t really have an impact either. Disappointed with both goals. The first goal, we win the ball a couple of times in midfield and then give it away. Maybe, we lose out in a big challenge in and around the box. To be fair to the back four, they’re throwing their body on the line in front of the ball to save the goal but it goes in. The second goal we switch off from a set play. Which is disappointing. We have to find a way of getting results away from home. Our away form is nowhere near good enough.

“Sometimes, you’ve got to say fair play. We won the ball back at times and turned it over on the first pass. As good as we were in the first-half, playing through them when they were pressing us, second-half we found it difficult. When they had it, I thought we were a bit disjointed. We tried to switch it up and get two playing higher up the pitch later in the game. Certainly with Jobe going further forward, then bringing Hemir on at the death.

“Even when we had a couple of chances at the end, we’re unlucky with the Mason goal. It’s marginally offside and it’s the correct decision having seen it back. We’re unlucky in that moment at 1-1 because it would have been a big moment in the game. In the second-half, it was Birmingham doing all the pushing and we made a lot of individual errors in the second-half.

“When teams come and press us, we have to be braver at times to play forward.

“We have to be better in possession certainly when we regain the ball. There was times today in the middle of the park and we gave the ball away on the first pass. Then you leave yourself vulnerable to a quick counter the other way. Some of our decision making at times in the second-half, albeit at times in the first-half I thought we looked a good team. There’s a lot for me to go away and improve on. Me first and then the team will follow.”

Birmingham’s Tony Mowbray: “I’m very proud of the group and their desire and determination to work really hard for each other on the back of a landscape of where we are in the league.

“After not winning many home games this season, it’s an amazing achievement for them.

“We’re in a predicament and we’re still in the same position after a couple of teams won.

“We’re still six points away from trouble but it’s given us a bit of confidence and momentum and the belief that we can win against anyone at home.

This is how fans reacted after Michael Beale refuses to shake Trai Hume’s hand in Sunderland’s defeat at Birmingham…

@wdt0_0: That alone should be enough for the sack

@mackemviking: Surely that’s enough to lose the dressing room.. prob already gone anyway. Time for Kyril to be accountable and admit the mistake

@MartysafcLane: Should be sacked for that alone. Pathetic

@AndyS28447047: Disgusting that. Totally unprofessional from Beale

@haymansafc: Shocking management. A ‘World class coach’ loved by the players? #SAFC #BealeOut

@mackeminmokum: #bealeout

@Lindsay11142359: I don’t normally comment I just read other comments about our football team, owners & coaching staff etc but this has angered me so much this bloke is something else.. 🔴⚪️

@Cyprus_63: That does it for me, I’ve tried to support the guy but that’s disgusting

@niall_tansey: Its insane that hes went and done that, Just as I thought he would have slowly started to get the fans on their side.

@Philip_RJ89: This is absolutely rancid. Hume’s been a top professional for his entire time at Sunderland. He’s as dedicated to the red and white cause as they come, and Beale does this. Horrific management.

@Capt_Fishpaste: This is remarkably petulant and pathetic too, by the way. Trai Hume runs through brick walls for #SAFC and his head coach treats him like this.

@GILESY1973: Get him gone, #GERS supporters warned he was arrogant. To not even acknowledge one of your best players in front of the full stadium. Nar fuck him like. #SAFC

@QPR_celona: How the snake Beale treats his players #SAFA @SunderlandAFC!! #QPR are lucky as we have a decent manager. The behaviour below will destroy players moral and belief. Disgusting 😠

@JoshBew95: If he hasn’t lost the dressing room before, he certainly will have now. Get the cunt out What a horrible, detestable, egotistical cunt he is. #BealeOut Insecure prick with a chip on his shoulder. Came in and tried to reinvent the wheel cos he has to be seen to have control, he’s totally alienated everybody. It’s actually quite spectacular how much damage he’s done.

@joel_gradwell: Wow. Get that cunt out.

@gabenoble12: Disgrace this. Trai Hume has turned up time and time again for us and would run through a brick wall. Contributed far more than Mick Beale ever will for this club. Get him gone.

@livvhutchison: Since being here Beale has shown nothing but arrogance, disrespect and played the blame game at every opportunity. Get him fucking gone.

@thompson1977: Didn’t want Beale, his lack of respect with the fans early doors was horrible, football has been dire and now showing an absolute lack of respect for his players! #BealeOut please @SunderlandAFC 🙏🏻

@StoreyLewis: I didn’t even watch it today due to work commitments and Ian Beale has still managed to piss me off. Get the p45 sorted now @SunderlandAFC

@twangmackem: Beale is a prick. He has to go before this club is ripped apart. #BealeOut

@Ian_Crow3: How does Beale ruin such a talented side? This is typical, and the recent good results just papered over that fact. To just ignore Hume, who gives everything, is a disgrace. That is how you lose a dressing room, if he hasn’t already. “Outstanding Progressive Coach” my arse. #SAFC

@amysafcxx: Nah i’m speechless as this mind. Look at the disappointment in Humes face tho. 🙃

@jadebrayxx: Poor Trai man 🥺 … just look at his little walk with his hand out, only wanted a lil well done from his gaffer. POOR! #safc

@brettd1981: I give him a chance, genuinely thought have we turned a corner . Sorry, though, this isn’t working. Sack him and just have Dodds till the summer. It isn’t working , it’s going to end in tears, so let’s get it over with now #safc

@AshleighBell92: The way you ignore your players & the fans is a fucking disgrace ! Why don’t you just fuck off you stupid bastard #BEALEOUT @SunderlandAFC is this really who you want coaching your players!!
