Matt Mills labels Brendan Rodgers a “gobshite” and compares him to “David Brent” as a clip from earlier this year goes viral again.
The footballer played under Rodgers during the 49-year-old’s short spell at Reading back in 2009, only to be got rid of after just a handful of games by the Royals.
Rodgers has rebounded and has held a string of high-profile managerial jobs in the Premier League since, but Mills had plenty to say on him, launched a surprise attack on his former coach.

Even though he concedes to say that Rodgers is a ‘great coach’, Mills did however compared the Leicester boss to the the hopeless TV character portrayed by Ricky Gervais.
“As it turns out, I don’t really like the guy at all, but Brendan Rodgers sold me the best line ever,” Mills told the UndrTheCosh podcast. “I was just like ‘this guy’s unreal’.”
Sold the dream, yeah. He’s just a gobshite mate. Like, he talks the best game ever. Great coach to be. If you got Brendan in now, like he’ll give you a presentation and he will give you in Spanish.
“One time we had a team meeting, started speaking Spanish. Not one Spanish player in the room like, what is fucking going on here?
“Yeah. He’s like David Brent out of the office.
“By the way, I have to cut that in, saying he’s a great coach. He’s a good coach. The way he wanted to play just didn’t suit the players that we had.
“This is a good story. So I signed and I had a knee up in the summer. And the surgeon was like, don’t train over the summer. Just go back three seasons, he said, you’ll be a little bit unfit overweight, whatever, but your knee will be right for the rest. So when I signed for Reading, I was overweight. I needed to get fit.
“Started the season, I only played three games, scored on my debut. We drew. No, we lost. No, we drew. And then he brought in the lad from Celtic. I didn’t play again. Played three games under him.
“And one time I went to see him and I was like, gaffer, we are bottom of the league. And I can’t get a sniff of playing here. No word of a lie, he’s gone like… Gucci belt. I shit you not. And I was like, yeah nice belt that mate, but we’re bottom of the league. He’s so here for the lifestyle, mate, in terms of, like Gucci. Strange guy.”
Fast forward to 2022 and the pressure is once again back on Brendan Rodgers to impress with the club in the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Going into the game against Palace on Saturday, they sat bottom of the standings, with four points from nine games played and are three behind Southampton who sit just outside the relegation zone.
Rodgers said: “No matter where you are, [home matches] are always very important, but in particular, with the position we’re in, it will be vital. In our last game, everyone was talking about it being toxic, but I don’t think about that. I want to produce a team that will play a level of football that will excite the supporters and give them a good feeling.
“We go into the game with a real motivation and hopefully the supporters get right behind the team. That will make a huge difference for us.
“Wherever you are in the table, your home games are very important, and hopefully we can replicate the performance and atmosphere from the Forest game, which is tough I know because it was a derby game, but we still want to generate that level of performance that gives that hope to supporters.
“In our last game, we saw it, and that came from the players, their intensity and their quality. That connection between the supporters and players was there. It’s always up to us, 12.30 kick-offs can be difficult games, but we have to generate intensity in the game to bring them along with us.”
The manager says he’s aware of how fans are feeling: “The [supporters’] mood will have been better after the Forest game, and they were probably hoping that we could have got the victory at Bournemouth, but seeing the manner in which we lost in that last 25 minutes wouldn’t have been so good.
“Our job is to lift the mood again. There is lots of noise and speculation, but for me, on the inside, we’re very dedicated to moving away from where we are. That’s going to need patience and support.”
Rodgers says the club’s hierarchy, including chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, has been well aware of the difficulties the side may face, this had lead to the boss believing he has had the backing of the club’s decision-makers.
This is what fans had to say as Matt Mills labels Brendan Rodgers a “gobshite” and compares him to “David Brent”…
@mike_newsome: Personally think this type of podcast should be binned – basically thrives on allowing the guest to mock and insult another professional. Low class, low quality.
@JamesAstall_: Footballer’s telling insider stories and you’re complaining. Sometimes it’s nice to hear this stuff rather than the usual media talk
@RANGERS_1983: Rodgers is definitely full of his self importance but I couldn’t think who this guy even was until I read the comments.
@AlexGoodyearxG: Matt Mills wasn’t exactly liked by his own teammates if you listen to certain stories
@billymunroe: So good. Heard so many things about this bloke. Unreal
@Winter1878: This has killed me 😭😭😭
@wavey_92: This interview has rattled me quite honestly. How am I supposed to just ignore it and take this guy seriously.
@Foxyproxy13131: Rodgers needs to go but Matt Mills tax, worse Leicester captain ever
@DJH99_: Hahahahahahahahahahaha I am in tears. The most Brendan Rodgers thing ever 😭😭
@shannonday04: 😂 wtf
@SamBWFC: Matt Mills, we had the absolute displeasure of him playing for us for 3 years
@Jakey_Boyz: Absolutely woeful footballer
@Holmesmyster: I’m sure BR worries about this clown.
@CathaILynch: Those lads come across as right bellends. Reflects worse on them than it does on Rodgers.
