Brentford’s Ivan Toney shares screenshot of racist message received and publicly shames abuser

Brentford’s Ivan Toney shares a screenshot of a racist message that he received and publicly shames the Instagram abuser too.

The striker posted a photo of a message sent from a social media account in the name of Antonio Neill in which he was called a ‘black c*nt’.

Toney also posted the Instagram picture feed of the alleged abuser and wrote: ‘I wasn’t even going to post this but I woke up angry…’

A Brentford statement read: ‘Last night, Ivan Toney was subjected to disgusting, racist abuse via a direct message received on social media.

‘We condemn this discriminatory behaviour in the strongest possible terms. An attack on one of our players is an attack on all of us.

‘Ivan will receive the full backing from the Club and from the Brentford fans who we have already seen condemning the abuse.

‘We expect strong support from the police, legal authorities and from Instagram’s parent company, Meta, to ensure that the individual involved faces the full force of the law for this despicable hate crime.’

The Premier League said via their Twitter account: “The Premier League condemns all forms of discrimination No one should have to face abuse of the kind received by Ivan Toney. It has no place in football or society. We are supporting Ivan and the club with investigations Football is for everyone #NoRoomForRacism”

The 26 year old footballer who was recently called up to the England squad for the first time, netted both Brentford’s goals in a 2-0 win at the Gtech Community Stadium.

They were his 7th and 8th goals of the Premier League season in just his 10th appearance and ended a run of three matches without a victory for the Bees.

It is far from the first time Toney has been targeted by racists having been left ‘disgusted’ after members of his and team-mate Rico Henry’s family were racially abused during the Premier League match with Everton at Goodison Park in May.

Toney tweeted at the time: ‘And for the man that racially abused my family I’ll do everything I can to get you the punishment you deserve.’

He told Sky Sports News at the time: ‘You don’t expect that in this day and age at a football match to happen to anybody, let alone your parents, that are coming to support you – mine and Rico’s parents.

‘Off the back of winning, you’re just thinking about getting the three points and it was a good feeling.

‘Hearing that straight away, you switch to anger and being upset that your family, which has come to support you all those miles, experience that straight after a victory.

‘It’s sad that I’m still having to sit here and talk about racism without my family just going to a game like any normal person and having a normal day.

‘Emotions sometimes get the better of people but it should never come out that is a reason for being racist. You can be angry with certain results but never should you jump to discriminate someone by the colour of their skin or whatever.

‘We can’t paint all the Everton fans the same way, I’m sure it’s just one, silly individual and the embarrassment of it is I believe his son had to grab him away from doing further damage. It’s just disgusting and we need to put an end to it as soon as possible.’

In January 2021, Meta – then Facebook – deleted the account of an Instagram user who racially abused Toney by sending the N-word in a private message.

In April of the same year, Toney shared a private message sent to him after Brentford had drawn with Birmingham that included the word ‘monkey’ and a number of monkey and banana emojis.

Toney wrote: ‘Honestly, I’m done.’

See abuse online? Here’s how you can report it

The Premier League has launched a dedicated reporting system for players, managers, coaches and their family members who receive serious discriminatory online abuse.

The central rapid response reporting system will enable players, managers and coaches to notify the Premier League of serious discriminatory abuse received via direct messages on social media platforms.

Each case will be reviewed, reported to the relevant social media company, investigated and legal action taken where appropriate.

The Premier League has developed the system and will respond to incidents.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Online discriminatory abuse is unacceptable in any walk of life and tackling this issue must be a priority. There are too many instances of footballers and their families receiving appalling discriminatory messages; nobody should have to deal with this.

“Our central reporting system has been developed to provide a rapid response and support for any players, managers and coaches who have been victims of serious online discrimination, whether targeted at themselves or family members.

“Our commitment is to review each case and to take immediate follow-up action.

“We have recently been made aware of the wholly unacceptable online racist abuse received by Ian Wright.

“The Premier League strongly condemns this deeply offensive behaviour.

“We immediately implemented our reporting system and will support Ian in any endeavour to bring the offenders to justice.

“The Premier League will not tolerate discriminatory behaviour in any form and we, alongside The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA will continue to challenge major social media companies that fail to do enough to block offensive discriminatory material and identify and ban offenders from their platforms.

“The Premier League and its clubs will also continue to work with the police, Crown Prosecution Service and Kick It Out to identify and ban offenders from Premier League grounds.”

This is what fans said as Brentford’s Ivan Toney shares a screenshot of one racist message received and publicly shames the abuser…

@23nsg: Sorry you have to put up with that. Congratulations on your goals last night and hope you make the World Cup squad 👍🏻

@KarlMuirhead: I am ashamed he is from Newcastle! Hopefully will be found and will be dealt with accordingly! I am pleased I don’t follow him and no one I follow does to. It’s 2022 and this is still going on. #nufc find him and get him what he deserves

@RichardDownes67: Excellent and speedy response from Brentford

@RB_London_RB: Good luck in life Mr Antonio Neill. That includes losing your friends, your job, and any potential career you may have had. I bet your parents will be also so proud of you. Well done @ivantoney24 for outing him.

@WelBeast: Disgusting behavior. Sorry about that Toney. Hopefully he ends up behind bars. There’s no place for racism anywhere.

@AliceTalksFooty: Why would people even think to DM someone something like this. Disgusting

@kitchlarrr: You know when you scored three against us, I couldn’t stand you 😂😂 but this kind of thing never crossed my mind. That lads a bell end

@Andy_Ebs4: Disgusting behaviour. He’s already been reported to the police too. We are with you Ivan! 🙏 @ivantoney24

@PJSutton9: Sadly I have to say those in power need to take the next step up and show they truly want to eradicate this archaic approach. Stiffer sentences not just bans must be put in place as clearly education is not working. Let’s put this shite to bed ASAP not in 50 years time.

@chickenparmos: Keep naming and shaming. No room for these animals in football or society. I just hope @northumbriapol look into this individual correctly and deal with it properly
