Matlock Town sign 35 year old experienced former Prem, EFL player with 500+ pro appearances, Adam Clayton, in a player-coach role.
The midfielder this week joins from Liversedge, leaving them mid-table in the Northern Premier League Division One East, and the season before that, Clayton had been playing for Rochdale in the National League.

The club tweeted on their newest signing: “Matlock Town are pleased to announce the signing of 35-year-old midfielder Adam Clayton from Liversedge_FC who joins Ryan Cresswell’s Gladiators in a player/coach role.
“Adam has had a storied career that has seen him play at the top of the English pyramid for Manchester City and Middlesbrough.
“It was with the Citizens that Adam began his career in 2008 while turning out for England U20s. He would have loan spells with Carlisle United and Leeds United. His time at Elland Road would become a permanent deal and between loan spells with Peterborough and MK Dons, Adam would make 45 appearances in his two year spell before a move to Huddersfield Town came calling and over another two-year period when he would make 85 appearances.
“In August 2014, Adam made the move to Middlesbrough, becoming an integral part of the Boro midfeld that won them promotion to the Premier League in 2016, going on to appear 34 times during the 16/17 season.
“After six years and 214 appearances spread between the Championship and Premier League while at Boro, a chance to link up with a former manager saw him move to Birmingham City for a two-year spell, followed by short spells with Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City and Rochdale.
“In August 2024, Adam made the decision to make the move to NPL Division One East side Liversedge FC, where he has played ten times, mostly under former Sedge manager and current Gladiators assistant manager Jonathan Rimmington.
“With over 500 appearances across the English pyramid, the addition of Adam will bring leadership and experience to a relatively young Gladiators midfield.
“Welcome to the Gladiators, Adam!”
Clayton posted on social media: “Delighted to sign for Matlock Town as player coach. Exciting project and can’t wait to get going.”
