Marc Roberts has said sorry for his red card with the mood in the dressing room ‘very low’ as Barnsley lose late on to Wycombe.
Richard Kone took his goal total to 19 for the season, helping the Chairboys come back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 late on. Marc Roberts was also shown a straight red for a late tackle on Luke Leahy.
The result sees Wycombe sitting 2nd with 58 points from 28 games, 2 points behind League One leaders Birmingham, who have two games in hand, Wrexham are 3rd with 52 points from 28 games.
Darrell Clarke said to Barnsley Chronicle: “It is a really sloppy second goal. We’re loose in possession then don’t mark the guy in the box. Phillo (Adam Phillips) has missed a great chance and Luca (Connell) is unfortunate with a lob.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to go again.
“It’s hard to keep picking them up but it’s my job. I have got through the other side of times like this many times as a manager and I will this time. I will make sure my players do. The changing room is very low but I will get them going.”
Regarding the red card tackle, Clarke said: “I haven’t looked at the clips. I thought we switched off from a throw and it looked a clumsy foul (for the penalty). It was strong tackle from Robbo who has apologised. I won’t chuck players under the bus, we have to stick together.
“Robbo is honest and he’s disappointed. He’s held his hands up. I won’t sacrifice him, I will deal with it in house.”
On Wycombe’s response to falling behind: “We scored then they had a lot of long balls over the top, we weren’t defending well enough and they caused us problems. We regrouped at half-time. We knew we would have to weather a storm because Wycombe have only lost one game at home all season.
“We defended well at times, the ‘keeper has made a couple of good saves. Early (Josh Earl) missed a great chance, middle of the goal from a set piece – you have to take those chances and 2-0 gives you a massive chance.”
On injuries to Max Watters and Stephen Humphrys: “We will have to assess them. It’s not ideal but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. Injuries are part and parcel. The lads need me. They will get my full support and we’ll look to turn the corner on Saturday.”
Wycombe caretaker Sam Grace said, per Bucks Free Press: “Once we got used to their system in the first 10 minutes, I thought the boys deserved the win.
“We made it hard for them with the hard press but we also had that threat from behind.
“Whether that was Dan Udoh with the ball running in from behind or Richard Kone doing the same along with Fred Onyedinma.
“Even when we made changes, it didn’t change anything.
“We were disappointed with our final balls on the weekend [against Northampton] but we were a lot better tonight and with Richard, we see him doing that every day in training.
“At the time of the penalty and the sending off, we had real momentum as we kept on going.
“But I think we were quietly confident we were going to get that second goal.
“We made it hard for them.”
On Kone: “He was fresh.
“We know that the performance against Northampton wasn’t what we wanted.
“But if Richard plays the full 90 on Saturday, he’s not getting the winner tonight.
“I said it last week and I’ll say it again, Richard wants to get promoted with Wycombe.
“I don’t think anyone can have any doubts about his commitment as he is all in.”
Speaking on his goals, Kone, said: “I have missed a few [penalties] recently, so I try and not think about it.
“I take any pen as they come and that is what I did.”
On his injury-time winner: “G did brilliantly in the middle of the park, ran down the channel and he found me.
“I was happy to be happy in the box and head it in.
“I feel welcomed at this place and I have never seen that before.
“The people are lovely here, I love them and I can’t thank them enough.”

Twitter users reacted with Marc Roberts sorry for his red card, and the mood in the dressing room ‘very low’ as Barnsley lose to Wycombe…
@MichaelBray33: Liquidate for everyone’s sake.
@taylorallott2: We are so wank it’s unreal
@luthersaxton_: Whilst these happy clappers keep clapping, the board will continue to do fuck all. Joke.
@j98str: Board out.
@ShaunLeeBFC: boards laughing at us
@BwellTyke: @JulieAnneQuay please sell up and fuck off with the rest of them
@connoralmond02: it’s fucking SHIT in Wycombe is what it is, absolutely garbage heartless this squad and lack of investment into the team is going to get clarke sacked by no fault of his own, sick to death of this every week. SIGN SOME QUALITY PLAYERS
@chadhart110: Sign some fucking players this is disgraceful or sell up
@antclare78: We’re not progressing. Football suicide tonight.
@CadWMC: Liquidation would be a relief at this point
@thompsonben92: Squad nowhere near good enough. Ownership group is not fit to run the club. And whilst Clarke has been thrown under the bus by the ownership group, it’s clear to see how he was down the pecking order initially.
@MarkRyd11188889: Absolutely shambolic. What a crap team we’ve really got. Genuinely proper crap aren’t we. We ant got a decent player in squad. All down to the board. Year on year there killing us. Cheers @JulieAnneQuay…. no idea between the set of you in that boardroom what your doing
@AshfieldTyke: My mid table finish is looking good. Manager’s crying out for some decent player’s and the board are throwing him under the bus with their inactivity and poor recruitment.
@barnsleywarrior: This has to be one of the worst Barnsley teams I’ve ever watched the defending is laughable and the inability to pass a ball 10yard to a team mate is just embarrassing I just can’t believe what I’m watching sometimes 🤷♂️🤷♂️
@samanthawilton1: Players are deteriorating under Clarke, nothing new, same poor old tactics game after game. Time to depart, take the board with you too!! Nothing from them for months. Only hear from them when all is good!!
@VanceBulla:
Season over you can see it in players
Lost interest, no heart or desire
They know we are finished
Stems from top
@dingletyke: Stick a Tesco on Oakwell. No more cash from me whilst you own the club.
@Tyke1912: Nice to see them having a laugh and fucking about after the final whistle. It means absolutely nothing to them does it.
@JacobSwallow4: We’re gonna rot in this league for a long long while
