Man Utd get booed off by fans after post-season friendly defeat in Malaysia

Man Utd get booed off by fans after their controversial post-season friendly defeat while out on a tour in Malaysia this week.

It was also smiles when United boarded the plane, being served drinkers and a luxurious meal, touching a nerve with some fans with the club ready to fly out hours after a season to forget, finishing 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, also missing Champions League qualification, and European qualification altogether.

The trip, generating around $10m (£7.8m), came after a 60-game season, highlighting commercial priorities despite fan and team discontent.

The game against ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur played out to a 1-0 defeat, further frustration for head coach Ruben Amorim, ending their post-season Asia tour with boos from the 72,550 fans at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Despite a recent Premier League win against Aston Villa, United struggled with familiar goalscoring issues, failing to convert chances in hot, humid conditions while using 25 outfield players.

A second-half goal by Myanmar’s Maung Maung Lwin sealed the loss.

But who cares what the fans, players and staff think, right? As long as the club are making money.

“I feel always guilty of the performance of the team since I am here in the first game,” Amorim said.

“I am guilty then the boos from the fans, maybe it is something we need because every game that we lost in the Premier League, they were always there.

“I felt when we finished every time the supporters were with us. Let’s see for next season.

“We should perform better. We were slow, we don’t have in us to win every exercise in training, and every game the important thing is we had no injuries.

“With some players it was a risk but we wanted to show respect to the fans. We should win with these kind of games.

Amorim declined to publicly confirm the imminent signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5m deal. “You have to wait for that for the next season. It is for you guys to talk about.

“I won’t confirm anything. I have no news. We will see. There will be some changes.”

He said to the club’s media: “Of course, we should perform better. We were slow and we have to have it in us to win every exercise in training and every game. But the important thing is that we didn’t have any injuries. Some players were a risk but we wanted to respect all of the fans put all the players in the game. We should win these games but we move on.

“Today was completely different. I felt during and also in some games, also against Liverpool and Manchester City, that we started believing and started playing different football. It’s something we need to change in our team but we will change also with confidence. We just need to focus on that first game of the Premier League, that is our focus now.

“We played quite well in the last game of the Premier League against a team trying to get into the Champions League. Today was completely different. My biggest concern is every game, every small-sided game on the street, we need to have that feeling. We need to win every game, every exercise. It’s something we need to push for the players. But the way I play is the same as other coaches. You have an idea and stick with your ideas. You can change something but I’m just one more coach who reached this level by believing in certain things. We will, of course, need to improve but I’m really confident.”

On the boos: “I feel always guilty. I said that in the last game. I’m always guilty of the performance of the team. No matter what. Since I’m here for the first day, I am guilty. Then the boos from the fans is something that we need maybe because every game we lost in the Premier League, they were always there. So it’s like if the way of playing they see is not working, they will change the way they behave. But I felt then like we finish, walk away and, every time, the supporters were with us. Again, let’s wait for the next season.”

Regarding Hojlund lacking confidence: “Sometimes, you can overthink the situation. Sometimes, you go to holidays and arrive on the first day now to start for a new season and even the environment in the changing ground can help a player get a different confidence. That is our expectation. Like I said, if you look at all the data, we have improved in the last games but we have a lack of goals. We will try to assess that and be prepared for that first game in the Premier League.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted when seeing Man Utd get booed off by fans after their post-season friendly defeat in Malaysia…

@RubensMUFC: Too right, but you have happy clappers for every game at OT, keeping the Glazers bank accounts topped up and literally celebrating mediocrity

@Mcky25Michael: Agree 100%. The fans are too fucking soft on these lot. You’re the worst man united squad in history. Fuck off

@willjoy13: He’s right. Players need to feel the consequences of losing every week. Clapping and cheering them off after every loss is stupid

@RandyscrandyL: I respect him for telling everyone how shit they are but my brother in Christ it is your job to make them better.

@FelipeMucf: At what point do we start blaiming Amorim system or does he have a free pass cause he was good in another team

@BenUpdated: Dunno what anyone expects with hojlund upfront. Ball control of a wardrobe. Terrible.

@SpydiiYT: Getting booed in a friendly is crazy

@cmcn67: Getting booed off in a friendly is a low I’d probably never come back from
