Maidstone issue plea following serious incident during game against Concord

Maidstone United issue a plea following a serious incident which took place during their National League South game against Concord.

The Stones chief executive Bill Williams has asked supporters for help after claims of racist abuse in their 2-2 with the Essex-based side.

It was a game, attended by 2,023 fans, which also saw visiting goalkeeper Myles Roberts red carded after picking up two yellow cards.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Statement following yesterday’s match versus Concord Rangers.

Club chief executive Bill Williams said: “I am aware of allegations on Twitter by the Concord Rangers goalkeeper that racist comments were directed at him. We are sorry and dismayed to read this.

“Let me be crystal clear – racism has no place in our game and in our society as a whole.

“If we are able to identify the culprit or culprits and I believe we’re only talking about one or two amongst a crowd of 2,000 – they will be dealt with in the strongest possible terms.

“If it was you and we’re not able to find you, let me say here and now: you’re not welcome at our ground ever again.

“If I can make one plea at this time – if anyone hears or sees anything untoward at matches, be you a player, official or supporter, please report it at that time. I fear the failure to do so on this occasion and leave it to social media a couple of hours later, will let those individuals off the hook and that is almost as sad as the incident itself.”

Concord Rangers said on Twitter: “Racism has no place in our game. Nobody should ever in any walk of life be subjected to racist abuse. Not today not tomorrow not any day.”

Clubs including Hemel Hempstead and Chippenham posted messages of support to Myles Roberts while Concord assistant boss Danny Green – the former Charlton winger – said: “On a sour note, our young goalkeeper received racist abuse this afternoon. A young man learning his trade on loan from a Premier League team, I’m absolutely gutted that this has happened.

“We will support him and stand with him every step of the way.”

Fans reacted as Maidstone issue a plea following serious incident during their game against Concord…

@_DaveDoesStuff: Please send my personal support to your young GK! No one deserves to be racially abused and I hope he’s ok! Please remind him it’s a minority and not all of us are like that! I’ll support him every step! Good luck.

@smacca1975: Myles is a top lad, nobody deserves that especially him

@Harry92430858: Sorry to hear this, always rivalry in football but never this, absolutely disgusting, hope he is okay 😞❤️⚽️

@CatholicUtdFC: Hi, we stand with you with this guys. There is no call for racism, FULL STOP. 👊 Please send our support to your young keeper.

@kianwardgk: Throwing bottled at players to racially abusing our goalkeeper. Some of those Maidstone United fans are a disgrace to the club they ‘support’ a small minority ruining the name and reputation of an established and well supported non league side. All around 14-16 years old too!

@robinsonethan21: @NationalLeague @maidstoneunited Sickening and embarrassing that at 19 years old @MylesRoberts_ for @ConcordRangers is receiving racist abuse from home fans. This needs to be stopped at EVERY level of sport.

@HemsleyJamie: Lifetime ban for those responsible it has no place in the game, banter with a goalkeeper is part of the game but racism is unacceptable, hopefully those responsible are found and dealt with.

@Tommorgan1986: Absolute disgrace! The game is for all of us! 🤬😡

@BlackmanSonya: This is appalling in the world we are living in today. No one should have to go through this. 😔

@FansMaidstone: I just don’t see how people can use someone’s race against them, it just makes no sense and is absolutely abhorrent and vile. This need to be dealt with in the most serious of ways, #kickitout
